So today I filled a huge plastic can with water, lowered the motor in and fired it up for the first time since it was winterized last fall. Had the water pump plugs and all the rest done when was winterized. After she fired up she wasn't pissin. Temp alarm went on shortly after. Fished some wire up Into the piss hose and then hooked hose to the water flush piece on the side and immediately she started pissing(engine off)
Started up again and pissed and alarm cut out.disconected flush valve and fired up again with water in pale and she's pissing fine.
Have you guys ever had this happen? Maybe a piece of dirt/ gunk from sitting in the yard all winter?? .
Running fine now.

The tell tale actually has nothing, specifically, to do with overheating. It's just sort of a secondary measure to see if water is flowing. In other words, the tell tale could be TOTALLY plugged, yet there could very well be the normal flow of water through the engine.

You may have had two things going on... One, the clogged tell tale and, two, the impeller may have been installed backwards and it just took some time for the vanes to flip back to normal. 'Course, that's just a guess. But if all is good now, I wouldn't worry about it - just keep an eye on it for a little while to make sure it's still good.

I just had this happen to my Yamaha kicker and had to keep sticking a paper clip in the hole to make it pee so I took out the thermostat and the passages were LOADED with salt deposits so I cleaned it all out with CLR cleaner and put a new Therm in now All good

You need to look into the original issue. The first running probably loosened up /softened the impeller. Eventually, I feel that the pump is going to fail. The fact that the overheat alarm went off tells you that something is wrong. Check t-stats first, condition of cooling chambers next and if all seems OK, you will have to drop the LU and rebuild the pump
