As most know, boat guys are always looking for a winter project...the next best thing for the boat. This year we decided to add a gamechanger for offshore bottom fishing. After some research, we have installed a Rhodan on our 282. We decided to go with Lithium Ion batteries due to space restraints and performance. We have not tested it away from the dock yet as we just finished the rail work. I will update on its performance when we take her out. Below are some pics:

its all a question of the amp hours....we bought the two in parallel to to get a total of 76 amp hours. The single batteries go up to 50 or 60, then there a big jump in price to get 100 amp hours. These batteries were on sale and we got the advantage of additional amp hours. In addition, these two smaller batteries fit well in that berth compartment.

I know you haven't run it to test, but is there a calculation for additional run time on 2 batteries in parallel?
Two batteries in parallel keeps voltage the same and doubles the capacity (amp-hrs). So, if you have two 50amp-hr batteries in parallel, you effectively have 100amp-hrs on that battery "bank". To determine how much run time you will have, you need to know the amp draw. If the device (trolling motor, fridge, whatever) draws, say 20 amps, the runtime is 100amp-hrs / 20 amps= 5 hrs

man this is exactly what I want to do on our 282. It'd be cool if you had the measurements for the aluminum mount. Also, the batteries are were I figured I'd mount them. How did you deal with the slope in that compartment for the battery brackets?

We built a shelf in there, fastening it to the sides of the compartment. No fastening on the slope side as concern for the hull. From there, we screwed battery trays to the shelf.shelf.jpeg

I wanted to share the last thing we did for this set-up and that was the RAM mount to hold the trolling motor in place. We bought new clamps for the rail and shaft of motor using the body of the mount Rhodan shipped to us.Ram mount1 (2).jpgRam mount2 (2).jpg

After a discussion with the battery guys, Lithium Ion batteries are different and you need to change the mindset of how we have traditionally charged. The long and short is yoiu do not trickle charge....you discharge as much as possible to preserve the life of the batteries. our plan is to store the charger and pull it out when we need to charge. It will get warm while charging and we want to monitor first before any permanent mounting. In addition, you hook it up, charge the batteries and then disconnect. You do not leave a charger connected to the batteries. It is also recommended that you unplug the trolling motor from the batteries when you are not using or planning on using the trolling motor.

in a nut shell, charge the batteries before a trip and do not charge until you ready to go again. And only do that if you have discharged them to about 80% or more. We are new to these batteries and will be monitoring closely.
