Just left the Grady dealer (P.O.E.) Southhold, Ny. I spoke to my buddy and he stated that this model will be arriving sometime around July this year. He said the specifics were not clear, with regard to type of transom, i.e. - notched like the 265, or the euro-stlye like on current models. He also stated that they (the dealer) have been requesting a 28 ft. version of the 265, since the departure of the 265. I am sure i am not the only curious one out here, let's wait and see what they deliver. He also had no specifics regarding price, however they have a nice leftover 2007 305 express powered with 250's that he will let go for 190k, i was tempted - but will resist.

Some of the members of our new Tidewater Grady-White Club are going on a GW Plant Tour on 22 May. Perhaps the big blue sheeting will be blocking part of the line... :D

Hopefully it is a notched transom, if it is a euro bracket the cockpit will likely be tiny, the 30express is barely bigger then the 265's cockpit, so a eurotransom on a 28 would likely be a downgrade in size. A 28 with a notched transom would be one heck of a fishing platform....if it is a notched transom I might have to tap into my accounts....

That is exactly what i told my buddy at the dealer, he agrees. I always wished i had just one more foot in the cockpit for fishing, although i have yet to see aboat that i could not critcize.

It's tough to guess what Grady will do with the 28 Express. The 30 Express has a larger helm area than the Marlin so that eats up cockpit space, will they do the same for the 28? A 28 with the the notched transom will have similar cockpit area as the Marlin (the older 25' Sailfish have more cockpit area than the 28'ers). Hopefully it will not have the center helm like the other express models. A large L shaped seat will give you as much seating area and be easier to get around in. A 9 1/2' beam doesn't leave that much room for the center helm set-up.

Gradyfish, for what you like doing it probably isn't a good move for you. Unless they add 50 gallons to the tank(s), you would loose range.

That 9'6" beam will also leave plenty of room for either big single or twin inboards under the raised bridge deck... :D :D :D

That will be the day Grady abandons the euro style family sized portion transom to better serve fisherman. After all, where would the fold down seat go and various faucets and sinks ?

Twin F350?'s I have sailfish with Twin F250's and it really moves could only imagine what F350's would do probabby too much HP for the 28ft. Having a larger gas tank would be nice for extended range.

Grog, I am wonderign what the range will be the 30's range is just ok IMHO for a boat its size. I's assume it would have 50 more gal but who knwos anymore. I'd assume it would be a center helm with just bench seats, maybe an L on one side would be nice to add seating but not make it too crowded. I have a feeling it will have no more space then the 26 since the 30 is only like 4 more sq ft...which is nothing really in a jump in boat size like that, it should be more, plus then you have a euro transom to fish around. Euro transom or nothced, hopefully it has no seats in the back and very little to clutter the back, it would be nice to see a true fishing boat from Grady once again like the 26 and some of the older similar models from, the past.

For it to be the ideal layout, it should be a stretch 265 with an aft cabin as the only major change. Everything else would be in proportion, maybe 4" in beam and 6-8" in cockpit length as well as a few inches in the helm and cabin. The helm on the 265 is enough room for most boats in that size, no real need to add there IMHO, but a little bigger cabin with an aft bed would be a great selling point and might win over many buyers since the only boats with this are walkarounds so far, there are not many well designed 28 express's and the few that are out there lack a lot, hopefully this one is better then those out there.

Ican't imagine a better cruising layout other than the aft berth. The helm can be squishy sometimes but we are not a big family so it's not an issue for us.
The transom works great . Pods wouldn't be a big problem as long as they weren't too extended and they didn't fill the rear up with all that stuff that doesn't let you get close to the action.
I personally would like to have some kind of platform on both sides that sheilds lines away from the props and allows easeir access in and out of the boat.I nearly bought a Scout 280 before the 265 and i thought the transom and cockpit on that was excellent. Unfortunately the helm wasn't even close to the development that's gone into the 265.
I guess in trying to please everyone Grady has trouble pleasing the more hardcore and specialised elements.

Jekyl, its funny you mention the scout, that was one of the boats we had looked at multiple times, but I've heard so so things about the 28 from owners. For the money the Grady seemed like more boat, the Scouts fit and finish lacked IMO and the helm was horrible. The cockpit was good but I like the Grady's better especially offshore, leadering a fish on a notched transom is a ton easier then a eurotransom.

To fit a bigger tank(s) in the Sailfish hull, the aft cabin would be smaller, making it more like a locker or the bridge raised higher to fit the tank under the aft cabin. The Dolphin had the same hull and had 250 gallons but lacked the aft cabin. You just run out of space to put stuff in a 28' hull.

Hopefully Grady does more than change the helm layout.

I doubt the express would be on the sailfish hull, if it is it will be a flop, that hull is awesome for a walkaround, but for an express, you need a new hull. Take it from Regulator's older express used from a CC hull and Grady's 28 diesel, they were flops because they used previous hulls and were not designed from the bottom up. Any boat not done from the bottom up and designed specifically for that boat itself will not run right or be a good boat. I would hope that the express would be wider then the sailfish since the helm takes up more room. A wider boat also gives more interior space all around. Hopefully Grady took a peak at the Mako 28 express, gorgeous boat just I like the center helm of the Grady's. An express is not truely an express without the center helm. We will just have to wait and see what Grady comes out with. I'm sure it will be a great boat, the real questions will be is fishing compromised and will this new layout be worth it for owner's of smaller or similar sized boats to upgrade to it.

I totally agree about the centre helm..........it's the "ducks guts" as we say here in OZ.......and as yet haven't leadered a big fish from the cockpit, until we get everything mechanical sorted we are being frustrated by ordinary weather and problems. So will just have to wait awhile longer. "fish"Have you ever had the oil pumps apart on the oil tanks on your old 200hpdi?

Hayden, I have not had any issues with them, I did have my dealer service them at about 200 hours since I was in for routine service then. The only issue we ever had with the boat was the fuel pumps going, other then that they were flawless.

I have not heard this and it does surprise me a bit. The 300 still outsells the 305 which is somewhat unusual for a new model.

On another subject - I need to snap and post some pix of my new canvas. It looks like it belongs on a Cabo, Viking, Hatteras, etc. yacht. I wonder now if I can order a boat w/o canvas. Now that I have a custom job it would be hard to go back. The new version has seems that match the windshield and hardtop support lines. The from sections wrap further around the sides and there is no gaps for water to seep in from spray. Awesome. :D
