Console Speaker Clearance

This issue may or not be exclusive to the 222. The speakers mounted into the console, lower part of the helm are original so I went to replace them with JL Audio mx650 speakers. Unfortunately, the JL speakers are too deep and don’t go in all the way bc they hit the plywood wall of the inside of the console. Has anyone ran into this problem? If so, is there a way to make it work or do I have to find different speakers?

Thought about that, trying to avoid it, would like to maintain clean appearance if possible.

Prob need a flush mount speaker. Measure the depth and see what BOE Marine has for the application.

There's not a whole lot of options here. You said you wanted to try and keep the speakers you just bought. Making a spacer is the only way to do that. Unless the plywood wall is a false wall - then you can cut into that. There's absolutely nothing "not clean" about using a spacer - it's all in your skill set. Done right, no one but you would know that it's not stock.

Other than that, as mentioned above, take some easy/quick measurements and buy a new set.

You can certainly try that. Might want to see how much room you have in front of the black plastic pieces. I think if it were me, I would get new speakers and see if you can use those elsewhere in the boat.

Update for anyone who runs into this problem. I found spacer rings on eBay for under $50 for a pair. They come predrilled in any size you need. For more, you can get LED spacer rings.

Wanted to update for anyone planning to install 770 speakers on a 222 in the future. Ended up buying a hole saw to cut the speaker cutouts. Bout a 6-⅜ for $30 versus buying the recommended 6-¼ hole day for $100. Used a hammer drill, started in reverse and worked out fine. For the existing cutouts on the console, had to drill a piece of 2 pieces of 1” board in existing hole to give the hole saw something to bite to. If you go with 770’s you will have to ad 1-¼” worth of spacers for the speakers to fit. Going to install an amp next in the foot box at bottom of console to bring these speakers to life.

Here is the finished product for the console speakers. I had to use 2 spacers to make up the 1-¼” difference. Trimmed Out out of Florida was very responsive and awesome to work with. When I completely redo my dash I’m calling them. Biggest issues was the stainless steel screws from Home Depot. Will go to fastenal next time to avoid a big headache.
