Ok, I got a new Nikon D-3100 yesterday so of course I had to try it out. My Nikon D-40 is 6 mega pixel while the 3100 is 14. Hopefully I will be able to get some cool close ups and be able to have clearer pictures when I crop.
Tonight I had some very cooperative juvenile Herons on my dock, I was able to get within 5 feet of them for some cool shots. I also took a couple of some Osprey flying over me and around my yard.
I cant help but show the regurgitation of some fiddlers by one of the Heron.
I tried to show a series of blinking, I stood there and took a lot shots. I can see my dock reflecting in his eye. Here they are;

Nice pictures like always. Brian, to tell you the truth i don't see any difference on the pictures between the new one and the D40, actually i think the pics with the D40 are better ?????
I also have the Nikon D-50. Took me a while to find a good camera and i think i hit the jackpot. I don't have a zoom lens yet( i have the standard 30-80 i think) but i would like to get one up to 300.
