Hi folks. I am currently replacing my windlass and rode. Wondering what the proper amount of rode is? I bottom fish and need to have the maximum rode. Grady White says 300 feet. What about rope vs. chain?

What do you guys have in your 330s?

Not enough for fishing in current in 130 feet. I'm going to add more chain and another 100 feet of rope. Hopefully is will be as easy as having my local marina splice more in. I think I have 300 now but not 100%.

Your chain should be at least the length of your boat. As to rode, I guess it should be 7X your water depth. I use an oversized Fortress and am very happy with it in soft San Francisco Bay mud.
Good luck!

I have 250 feet of 5/8 8 plait and and 30 feet of 5/16 HT chain. How much the locker will hold may be a function of the size and type rode. I think 8 plait lays better, tried both. I don't think I could ever get 700 feet of any rode in my locker without major snarl problems, but maybe? I feel confident I could work with 300+ though.

Coconut, you have 700 ft of rope and 50 ft of chain in your 330? I am surprised the locker will hold that much!

What type of rope are you using? 3 strand or 8 plait? What diameter?

What type of windlass are you using? Any trouble with snags and such? Do you have to go down to the locker and adjust the rode as you are pulling in line?
