Is there a wrench or other tool that fits the star shaped hole in the top of a S/L windless? Is this to tighten it so it no longer slips?

Yes. On older models it was a yellow/orange hard plastic wrench. On new models it is a metal wrench. You might want to contact them. their tech reps are pretty good.
