Is it somwhere in the 80g + range? That is going to be aluminum. It's very easy to check by opening sender access. There's absolutely no way to know if it's due for replacement (or if it already has been) with the info given. It'd just be a wild guess. Talk to the seller and/or inspect it.

Just as a side note, On&Off and muriatic acid both have hydrochloric acid in them as the main active ingredient but in different percentages. I believe muriatic has a slightly higher percentage of HCL in it? If memory serves, On&Off also has phosphoric acid in it - which is slightly less...

Assuming this is the part of the engine that remains in the water? I use On&Off (hydrochloric) all the time on motors. No issues ever. You probably only need to mix it, at most, 50/50. If what you want to remove is only a stain, then something Iron Out will likely work.

Based on the drainage holes it's safe to say that yes, the boat originally had an anchor locker. But just becasue someone added the windlass themselves, I don't know that that would clasify as a "hack job", though. Maybe it could have been done better? But don't assume that GW does a "neat"...

Yes, then it is a Mercruiser not a Mercury. Mercury in the name used with the outboards. The outdrive is likely named what I mentioned, as well (Mercruiser is a given... it's more about which particular model OD you have).
