Putting Up the Canvas without getting a heart attack

It seems like everyone has their own method. I sart with a side working the snaps starting with the easiest edge (not all the snaps may go yet), then zipper a front and a side. Repeat for the other side then do the two fronts last. If you have snaps they just don't make it, letting it stretch...

    Poppet valve replacement

If you already have the parts, I'd say do it. The longer those bolts stay in the harder they are to get out. Just DON'T let the grommet pop in the motor, you'd be suprised how easy it was for it to happen.

    Motor swap ?

You may get better MPG but I doubt it's worth getting rid of 2 good running motors for an unknown. You may notice an improvement with a DI motor but you may want to find a pair of F150's.

    Non rot wood transom/stringers

Even the XL or whatever fancy term plywood will rot, it may take longer but it will still rot. But.... if the wood is kept dry it will never rot. The secret is to properly seal any penetrations and completely glass the the outsides. Composites are strong and light but if they fail they have...

Oil Primer Pump 1986 Offshore 24

Normally there is a gear pump on the oil tank to fill the tank on the motor. Good luck trying to suck oil through a gear pump (or at least one that's in working condition). I'd check out the whole system before using the boat, clean the oil tank (take that one from experience), change the...

28 foot double spreader outriggers on Marlin

Do you have enough area to mount them? I'm not sure if the attachment points would work. How will they sit when up?

    Seat Pedestal Attachment

Just be sure there isn't a sringer or bulkhead where you want the seat, Grady should be able to send you some drawings.

    Seat Pedestal Attachment

Stainless would be the best material, it's to easy to strip the threads in phenolic. Don't try to use nuts and washers you'll drive yourself nuts, go with 2 half moon flanges with tapped holes. Make a nice thick epoxy paste to glue the flange to the underside of the deck (use short bolts to...

    Seat Pedestal Attachment

If you are going to drill the large hole, it's easy. Make the 6" hole then drill the holes for the pedestol. Next make 2 backing plates with the holes pre tapped, then epoxy them to the uderside of the deck. Seal the bolt holes then close up the access hole.

    Dry Tortugas via Key West

You may be a little light on your fuel consumpion. The trip seems to be aprox 150 miles round trip, I'd figure using 100 gallons for the trip to be safe plus whatever you plan to use diving. When it's snotty you probably will not see much more than 1.5 MPG, much better to err on the safe side...

What do you guys think of this 185 to purchase?

I'll assume the $29K is for the boat not taxes, transportation,.... It seems to be basically a new used boat. Assuming she liked the ride, I'd take $1k off the $29K budget and get a survey, then go cash in hand to the owner and say if it passes the survey here's my offer. It's costing the...

    Seat Pedestal Attachment

The toggle has 2 relatively thin areas to spread the force, where a fender washer distributes the load over a broader area. You're going to have 200 pounds banging on a 2 foot lever, the edges of the toggle will be digging in the underside. Now as they dig in, the bolt is going to loosen and...

    Seat Pedestal Attachment

If you can't get in there to thru-bolt it find a way to thru-bolt it. The toggles put a lot of stress on a small area, I wouldn't use them. I already had the misfortune of tearing out the seat on a friends boat, luckily I was able to grab onto the center console but bad things can happen...

    Transducers? shoot thru/transom/thru-hull?

I had the B60-20 in my Sailfish for about 7 years, it's not as nice as the newest CHIRP models but works fine. Above 35 MPH I loose bottom but there aren't many days in the ocean I can go faster. I wouldn't bother with the models with the paddle wheel speed sensor, it may work for a couple...

Where to find 1-3/8" gunnel mounts?

    I thought they went 1 1/4, 1 5/8, 1 3/4, then 2.

To E-TEC or NOT E-TEC that is the question

I was trying but got sucked back in... OK so it takes an F350 to match the holeshot of a 300 2 stroke? Basically an 800 pound motor vs a 550 pound motor. Do you think for a second that a commercial captian wouldn't get a discount to say how much better ____ motor are? Any modern motor...

Add hot water option to a Sailfish...?

Your best bet would be to heat the water on dock power then have the inverter or genset (prefered) keep it hot and add extra insulation to the heater. The water is OK to wash off the sand and salt water but I wouldn't want to take a real shower with it, are you sure you want hot water?

To E-TEC or NOT E-TEC that is the question

I wouldn't trust someone telling me the time on thehulltruth let alone actual performance numbers. Plus I'm sure if you go to Yami's page or Honda's page or Zuke's page you'll see data showing their motors on top. I have yet to see any 4 stroke match the low end power of a 2 stroke, I can't...

To E-TEC or NOT E-TEC that is the question

Weight wise the new 4 cyl F-200 seems to be a viable solution but the "old" 2 strokes still do the job. Yes if you're a charter capt or commercial you'll get 3-5000 hours on a 4 stroke but for the average person that uses it about 100 hours a year it'll never happen. You should get at least...

Twin 150 ox-66 one burning more fuel than the other

I thought only the HPDI series dropped cylinders at idle, I don't think there are enough "brains" in the OX series to handle it. Once you're sure both motors are running properly don't rule out the possibility of the flow meter(s) being off.
