Cannon Electric Downriggers Optimum vs Magnum 10

No experience with Canon, but I have used a pair of Scotty 1100 series (1116 in my case) electric downriggers for ocean salmon trolling the last 14 years with zero problems. Just need to tighten/tune them up occasionally. We are often trolling 250 to 300 feet down. For what it’s worth.

Installing Garmin 18 Fantom on my Grady white seafarer

It was just installed and I have only had the boat out for a couple hours. So I can’t really say much about my impressions of it yet. The motion scope did seem to work as advertised while we were out. There are probably other people on this board with more experience/opinion of it.

Installing Garmin 18 Fantom on my Grady white seafarer

Here you go. If you do contact Garmin let us know what they say, as I’m curious to know.

Installing Garmin 18 Fantom on my Grady white seafarer

For what it’s worth we just had a Fantom 18 professionally installed last month by Johnson Hicks, who probably installs as much Garmin stuff as anybody on the west coast. They flush mounted it on the highest point of the hardtop. Only had it out once and the rocket launchers did not appear to...

    228 Electronics and dash upgrade

AP 44 VRF medium capacity. Only had it out for an hour for sea trial but it worked good. I foresee this being a "how the hell did we ever get by without it" type of item. For what its worth they strongly advised for the Simrad AP, even though everything else is Garmin. Said they have had too...

    228 Electronics and dash upgrade

Yes Mark did good. Hopefully we get a good salmon season this Spring and can find some together. Going from our old transducer to this new one (TM275 LHW) I expect to see salmon pretty easily. This thing is the size of a melon!

    228 Electronics and dash upgrade

The dash has a divide/top cap. The fiberglass guy created a new piece to replace the top cap after measuring that piece. He did pull it off eventually but I’m not sure if he actually used it as a mold or form. I think he just measured it and created a new replacement based on the measurements...

    228 Electronics and dash upgrade

I know many of you on this forum have Seafarers, so I thought I would post this to give you some ideas of what is possible. We bought our 228 new in 2006 and we had a Furuno Navnet system installed that same year (MFD with Nav/GPS, Radar, Sounder). Decided after 14 years it was time for some...

    fair number off msrp?

I know you probably don’t want to hear this, but if I were looking to buy a boat right now, especially new or newer, I would wait. Once Covid gets mitigated people will go back to their lives, work, other hobbies etc. I can see a lot of people over the next 1-2 years realizing they don’t really...

    Question on Gimbal Mounts

Mounted ours with a backing plate right in front of the rear rod holders. 14 years and no issues or signs of stress. Skip the gimbal mounts if you’re serious about heavy lead and going deep. We troll down 250 feet or more in Monterey Bay for salmon.

Recommendations Auto pilot / Power steering pump

We are having a Simrad AP (AP 44 medium capacity) installed now, alongside new Garmin electronics. Based on research and advice from J-Hicks. They are all about Garmin but prefer the Simrad AP’s for reliability. Haven’t used it yet so this isn’t based on my own experience.

    Yamaha kicker update

Anyone heard the rumor that Yamaha is rolling out a new generation of kickers that are now electronic fuel injected and no more carb? Marine mechanic told me this but I can’t find anything on the web to confirm this rumor. Thought someone in the know on this board might have intel.

2 questions about reenforcing the rod holders

What trapper said. I would forget changing the rod holders and setup permanent mounts for your downriggers rather than using rod holder mounts, and use a metal backing plate under the gunnels. The benefit of the Scotty is convenience of throwing it on your existing downriggers mounts.

How many folks here have met in person?

Looking good. Last week of salmon, grab one of those suckers out the gate.

    Grady White 228 Pilot House

The looks of the top one seem to retain the Grady lines better. I think you should do something like that and report to us along the way. It’s something I have pondered occasionally, such as every time I clean the isenglass or if I’m sitting at the helm and the windshield top obstructs my view...

How to install kicker on 20' 208 Adventure

This is the fixed bracket I have on my 228. The area you are looking to install is similar. (Everything is covered in ash due to the fires here. We normally attempt to keep it somewhat cleaner)

2020 228 on the Monterey Bay

What Bloodwesier said. Couple inches up makes a noticeable difference for slow maneuvering. I'm in Aptos. Busy this weekend but thanks for the offer. Might get out Monday if I have time. Maybe i'll check out your electronics at some point down the road when we are both launching...
