Still not an apples to apples comparison but I have a 94 208 with a Johnson 175 motor and the OMC 15 X 17 prop. By myself and with less than half a tank of fuel I can get to 5500 rpm. Adding passengers and fuel will pull it down some but not less than 5100 rpm. I'm afraid I don't have any advice...

Mine is a black plastic cap that looks like it just snaps into the hub. I didn't try to remove it for fear of breaking it.

You should use a 1/2 amp fuse as shown in the diagram and I don't think connecting to the fuse panel is the right way to go. On my 94 208 the fuse panel only has power when the battery selector switch is set to position 1, 2 or Both. If your 96 is the same, the totalizer is going to reset to...

It looks like you don't have power to the green wire on the meter. The toggle switch could be a reset switch but if it is the meter should show zero in one position or the other. I don't know how to show the entire image either but hopefully you can use this diagram to trace the wiring back to...

Just another thought, when you say the tank was 1/2 full, was that going by the gage or did you dip the tank? If you were going by the gage and it isn't accurate you might not have had as much gas as you thought. Maybe the main tank is empty? It wouldn't take long for those twin 150's to burn...

You might want to check to make sure your alarm system is working also. On my 94 Johnson a fuel restriction will sound the warning horn.

I just went and looked at the tank on my 94 208. It's the original tank and it also has the Florida Marine decal and is painted grey. I'm not sure what's best to do with the scratches but I'm inclined to just leave them.

Have you checked with shopevinrude.com or boats.net? Several years ago I read somewhere that you should replace the original copper wires with the newer style suppression type wires so I ordered a set from shopevinrude and they came cut to length with the terminals and boots already installed...

I had the same problem with the all stainless knob. I sold it and installed the one that is lighter and made mostly of a polymer material and I like this one much better. It doesn't have nearly as much effect on the steering.

It definitely sounds like you don't have enough weight on the trailer hitch, I've always read that it should be about 6-10 percent of your total towed weight with boat trailers. It might take some trial and error but I would look into maybe moving the winch post forward a bit and/or the axles...
