    intro and 228 vs 232 vs 258

Last time I checked, NC does not require a permit to trailer boats under 10' wide.

    Trailer or Marina?

I keep my boat in the water year round - Maine in the summer and Florida in the winter. I very rarely pull it out on a trailer. Good bottom paint once a year, scrub the unpainted surfaces whenever you can find a warm shallow spot to jump in, and you're good to go. For me, there's nothing...

    Discharge Rules

Let me start by saying that my post is a bit off the OP's question, but close enough to the topic to warrant inclusion. Next, I confess to begin a "rules junkie", not because I enjoy it but rather out of necessity as a charter captain and commercial fisherman. Reading threw me for a loop...

    Marina Mischief

The marina should take some responsibility and at the very least check your boat each morning during their facility walk through. And THEY should install cameras or take other measures as necessary.

    Water in the Bilge

My cup holders also drain into the bilge. Assuming you operate in salt water, a couple of gallons of fresh water in a 10,000 pound boat shouldn't be a worry.

2005 26.5 Express - Water in Cabin under cushions

I tried a DIY fix a couple of times without success. A full removal of the rub rail and complete re-caulking was necessary. Now the cabin is dry as a bone.

    Trim switch kills engine

Very low batteries will do this.

2005 26.5 Express - Water in Cabin under cushions

I had the same problem for 2 years after buying my "slightly used" Gulfstream. We and the dealer tried everything including soaking every possible entry point. Turns out the rub rail near the bow had been damaged from hitting something. When moving through sloppy conditions, especially a head...

Higher RPM + Lower Top End Speed

I believe the most simple explanation is that your prop has changed size or pitch or both during the reconditioning. Higher RPMs and lower speed mean that you're pushing less water. When I went from a 17 pitch to a 15 pitch my top RPMs went from 5500 to 6000.

    Where to mount my radar?

My radar is mounted on the hardtop on a pedestal. It looks pretty much level with the waterline when the boat is sitting still. I've seen may folks angle their radar with a large forward tilt, I suppose so the unit is level when the boat is on plane. My setup works well, probably because if I...

    Anchor Locker Question

I had the same problem. I cut some plastic tubing in half and then glued that along that raw fiberglass edge. Lasted a few years before needing replacement.

    Boat names

"Small Craft Warning" is probably the second worst name I've ever heard. First place? "On The Rocks". Here in Maine it created an emergency every time it hit the airwaves.

222 won't track straight at low rpms

If you have trim tabs run with them fully down, i.e. push the bow down. That puts more of the longitudinal components of the hull in the water and makes many boats track more reliably at slow speeds.

    Dry Tortugas via Key West

Back home in Maine after a great season in Florida culminating in a trip to the Dry Tortugas. The DT is one of the most incredible places on earth. The clarity of the water, abundance of wildlife, history, tranquility and beauty make it a worthwhile adventure. We departed Key West with...

    Dry Tortugas via Key West

I've heard a lot about anchoring, and more generally in the variation of ranger enthusiasm for enforcing rules. For example, one friend was allowed to stay tied to the dock overnight during a slow stretch. Nonetheless, I'm taking an inflatable dinghy and more types of ground tackle than I...

    Dry Tortugas via Key West

Thanks Bill for the MSD reminder, Jim for the paper charts, and all the good wishes. Bob, I figure burning about 60 gals round trip and about 40 gals fishing and diving. With a capacity of 150 gallons that means about 50 gallons needed for 2x spare. We all know what bad weather does for...

    Dry Tortugas via Key West

Thanks guys. I've heard that the winds should be down by May, and I've read all the other posts on the forum about the trip. Just wondering if anyone else has experience with that time of year. But in any case I only make offshore runs when the weather forecast is good AND improving. If the...

How many guys have boat names and name graphics??

One funny note....a guy at our marina named his boat after his mother. When I said that was a bit odd since many guys name a boat after their wife the guy said "My mother's name never changes!"
