    Dry Storage Rack question

The marina I used on Lake Erie had carpet on the bunks. When I moved the Grady to Lake Michigan the marina did not have carpet. Almost immediately I had a gouge near the bow that could only have happened from the end corner of the wood bunk. The marina fixed the gouge for me and also...

    Dry Storage Rack question

Another thing to consider is the width between the horizontal supports. Assuming they center your boat correctly you would want the supports directly under you stringers. And, they should position the boat so that a few inches of he support extends back beyond the transom.

    Boatlift question here

GS There is an 800 number on their website www.davitmaster.com. They have authorized local installers in most areas. My lift was installed in 2004. It is an 11,000 lb model if I remember correctly. The lift is supported by four pilings. The lift is not connected to my dock in any...

    Boatlift question here

You can buy lifts that do not have a support frame elevated above your dock level. "The Silhouette Cradle Lift is designed to create a low-profile, attractive appearance. The Sihouette features our exclusive Double Drum Direct-Drive winch for smooth, quiet performance." The quote is from...

replacing factory rub rail with new factory rub rail

Some years ago the lift truck drivers ruined the rub rail on both sides of my Grady by putting it in/out of the dry slip. The guy who repaired it was really PO'd at the truck drivers because it was a lot of work. I installed a new rub rail on an 18 ft. boat a few months ago. Do it in the...

    1989 Grady Question

No. Storage on a trailer would not preclude a rot problem. Rain water seeping through cracks would be the prime cause. If it is an outboarb boat have the surveyor look especially close at the transom.

    1989 Grady Question

Hire a boat surveyor to check it out for you. They can tell if there is moisture/rot problems. A good one will do a very good inspection for you and give you a written report. If you don't have a lot of experience with boats it can be an expensive risk not to have a surveyor. On the...

Getting the Lead out- Davis Fish Seeker?

A similar diving device is used on the Great Lakes all the time. The product is called Dipsey Diver made by www.luhrjensen.com. For the Dipsey Diver I would guess 3 MPH would be top speed. Every walleye boat on Lake Erie would have a few and every salmon boat on the other Great Lakes would...

    208 Livewell

I'm thinking your drain would not be large enough to take the volumn you will pump into the livewell. I made that mistake on a livewell I built into my aluminum river boat.

    Trailer Bearings

The biggest problem for the DIY person is getting the old cups (outer raceways) out of your hubs. The cups are an interference fit in the hub. You could find a local auto repair shop that has a press that would do this for you. They can also clean out the old grease and install the new...

    Trailer Bearings

Further thought - If you remove the hub from the axel and take a good look at the bearigs, - and I would urge you to do so - if you see spalling on the bearing surface obviously they would be replaced. However, if you see dark stains on the raceway surfaces or on the rollers the bearing...

    Trailer Bearings

DE I worked in the industrial bearing industry for 30 years. Sounds like you bought a used unit. I have bought a few used trailers. Tthe wheel bearings are the first things I check. For some folks, when lubricating, they think" if a little bit is good a whole lot is better". From the...

Has anyone changed the gas fill hose on a Grady walk around?

NA2P I get the idea of an inner sleeve between the old and new hose. Did you use hose clamps to hold the two hoses on the inner sleeve? And, was the inner sleeve flexible?

    Replaceing cabin entrance

I should have been more specific - the cabinet maker said that he was concerned by the heat generated by the sun weaking the adhesive. His recommendation was the powder mix for exterior applications. My application was the stearn bulkhead on and I/O. The stearn would receive more direct sun...

    Replaceing cabin entrance

If it is the bulkhead (vertical) material it is probably 1/2 inch plywood covered both sides with laminate. I found the exact same laminate at a cabinet maker shop. He had all kinds of samples to look at. A 4 foot X 8 foot piece of laminate cost me about $70. I had to use a powdered...

90-23' Gulfstream Repower IO Volvo Penta DP

The new fuel injected engines are much more fuel efficient that the older carburetor engines. I'm hearing like an easy 20% for the same HP. Looking down the throat of my carb is like looking at a big hole in the bottom of the boat. At 3,500 RPM it really starts sucking the gas.

90-23' Gulfstream Repower IO Volvo Penta DP

You don't say that you have had any diagnostics done on your ccurrent engine. I would at least get a compression check and if that checks out OK then maybe a tune up and carb clean. Then test again. The good thing that can come from a bad compression test is that you have something to show...
