The finger works great with a little water and dish soap. I fill a small cup with water and a squirt of dish soap, wet my finger and slider it on the caulk bead two times -- first with tape down and second to flatten down tape edge. Second time I apply very little pressure.

Got it. Thanks for clarifying. On the orings, I check them each time I fill with gas. I replace them once they show any sign of wear or cracking. then I go around and replace all the fill orings: gas, water and diesel for generator.

What are the differences between the two Perko orings you are getting. I get the first is for the is for the gas caps. But what is the accessory you reference? BTW, I called Perko about getting a replacement part for my mast head light and they did the same thing for me by sending it gratis...
