Congratulations! I love my 2003 Gulfstream. Don't know your motor situation - I've got twin F200's (original), and get about 1.5 mpg on plane. Amazingly, I can troll with the mains at 2 knots.

I leave mine open with velcro strap when underway. Since it's not water tight, I don't see any advantage in keeping it closed. We're not in an out of there a lot, but enough that I wouldn't want the nuisance of having to open it each time.

Try swapping out the cable between the switch and the battery. That's the only piece of this that hasn't been changed yet.

I'm curious about the "turn". If at speed, maybe the tilt of the boat affected the fuel pick up from the tank? I know it was only one motor, but it seems like a clue.
