    barrier coating and blisters

I think in general it depends on the use of polyester epoxy resin (old) vs. vinylester resin (new), where polyester is prone to osmosis. I don't know when Grady changed, but as the owner of a 1988 Grady, I definitely had blisters on a boat that sat in water all year (previous owner) and I...

    Would you barrier coat a 20+ y.o. 19' hull?

Forget about the size. Its a Grady. Its also old enough that it was made from materials prone to osmotic blistering (if left in the water). Most small boats are trailered or kept on lifts, so a barrier coat is not needed. If you keep it wet-slipped, then you need a barrier coat. Most...

    22-8 Installing yamaha T8 Kicker

First of all make sure you use the biggest stainless washers you can find for backing. When I got my 228, the 1" wide washers that were original had been pulled into the fiberglass and wood so the kicker bracket was separated from the transom by a good half inch. I sold my kicker. I live on...

    bottom paint and sealer

like the 2 previous posters said, read the instructions for the Interprotect VERY carefully. Take note of every specific solvent wash & thinner b/c you will need to buy them. You'll need to wipe your hull w/ solvent wash (do NOT use latex gloves for this job). Your hull should have a sanded...

    bottom paint and sealer

I redid the bottom of my Seafarer a few years back and unfortunately I needed about 1.5 gallons of Interprotect to get 4 coats on. I only got 2+ coats out of a gallon, and that was using epoxy thinner to thin it out some. Sure dealers will say a gallon will do, but if you're doing it yourself...

Grady drive corrosion and soda blasting questions??

I paid $700 for a 228 Seafarer to be soda blasted at the marina where my boat is on the hard. I think you can find places to do it for $400 if you take it to them. This is in MD.

Grady drive corrosion and soda blasting questions??

You need to get a grinder or heavy duty sander on that bracket and see how much of the corroded aluminum comes off. You've gotten opinions that says its fine, but that looks waaaay worse than my bracket (which was painted in copper-based paint). Soda blasting is e great way to clean your hull...

    Ethanol....a way to stop it...maybe?

But then its only a small leap to wanting leaded gasoline back and in reality, who wants the acid rain of central Europe in the 80s-90s? And in a class action suit, we'll all sign on and get a one-time $20 payment in settlement and there will still be E-whatever in stations.

    Replacement tank - Seafarer

I did and had zero problems. But its all relative. My 20 y.o. tank apparently wasn't filled with lacquer residue and didn't have water intrusion. I'm sure many people don't have the $ to repower AND replace fuel tanks at the same time. The point of a separator filter is the eliminate the...

    Painting Over Bottom Paint

Either go cheap and do it often (with a lot of sanding work in between) or go expensive and do it less often. $200/gal paint is worth every penny if you've ever spent time with an orbital sander and a Tyvek suit. You say you don't moor the boat, so will it be on a trailer or lift? If so...

    Seafarer

My 88 Seafarer didn't have the auxillary fuel tank, and I removed the water tank from the bilge and cut a hatch in the deck for access. I store my bumpers and bait tray down there. So while I'm sure you could put a fish box in the floor, I don't know if it would be a factory option. Only...

    Transom worrys!

A surveyor would have told you if you had moisture instrusion and and structural issues w/ transom and hull. So I'm guessing you bought the boat w/o a survey. You probably should worry about a lot of stuff, transom included. Drilling test holes from the inside of the transom is a way to check...

    Cheesy Movie.. Grady White

That movie came on right after "Shark Swarm" starring John Schneider and Darryl Hannah. I saw that nice looking Grady too. Obviously I had little to watch on TV too.....never did finish "Sea Beast".

    lost 1 engine, possible repower

500 hrs isn't much for an OX66. How old is the engine? How much $ do you have burning a hole in your pocket? $5000 for a new powerhead vs. likely $30,000 for new twins is a significant difference that you won't recoup in fuel savings.

    Buying/refurbishing a tournament 19

Note he also joined 8 minutes before his first post. Good thing this isn't thehulltruth or he would have been crushed! :<>< As someone who's restored an 88 Seafarer, you will spend a number of hours removing, cleaning, oiling, and re-installing the teak. It will look spectacular for about...

    Gulfstream Fuel Primer Pumps..needed????

My Yam SWS EFI will start w/o priming, but it takes 4-8 seconds of turning over the motor vs. 2-3 seconds with it primed. So its not necessary, but helps take some work off your fuel pump and starter.

    Receptacles under gunwale

Looks like a recepticle for a trolling motor plug http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/st ... sNum=10615 Its either a marine plug or a european DC outlet. Maybe someone used a DC/AC adapter to run an AC blender off the DC battery circuit. :praise

    226 Seafarer Questions

Rail socket is probably from a mounted spotlight. Or could have been some bracket to hold an extra anchor.

    Too many Grady's, too confusing.

My Grady is named "Lost Sailor" so I know where you're coming from. I have a 228 also.
