Finally a Grady White owner and finally got her back home safely...

Epic trip, good work getting her home in one piece. Considering the time it took and the cost I think I would have paid someone to do it. I can understand your concerns about damage though. Are you sure you got 10MPG on the trip? Gas V8 engine? I would have thought you use more gas than that...

New Grady White 228 Seafarer owner with a couple of questions...

I have mine mounted on the top of the gunwales and I use the tilt/swivel bases . I mounted the bases with the 4 bolts and 5 mm Aluminum plate underneath. The gunwale is cored , make sure you seal the holes . I would replace the speakers with something similar to avoid drilling more holes.

Simrad AP to classic Raymarine compatibility?

I don't think you will be able to use the Simrad rudder reference, I don't think they are compatible. To be sure contact Raymarine, they should be able to tell you for sure .

    sealed batteries???

Thanks for bringing that to my attention Dennis. I didn't take much notice on these batteries, they were on the boat when I bought her in FLA. I removed them and replaced them soon after I got the boat home . I don't have these so I can't check if the tops come off but I take your word for it ...

Upgrade to hydraulic or electric steering systems

I would like Helmaster in my boat. I can't see the value in retrofitting though, about AU$20k . If buying a new boat it's a no brainer though. You save the $$ for the hydraulic steering and auto pilot. I would even consider if I was to repower. I know it works very well on tweens as I have been...

Upgrade to hydraulic or electric steering systems

Don't panic , that's south Pacific pesos ( shitvilian $$) in your part of the world you should be able to get the same for around $3000 and about $1400 for the ducer. I was going to get the 16" but figured it wouldn't fit on the dash. Bigger screen is always better, especially for old eyes.

    sealed batteries???

My boat came with these wet cell sealed American batteries, you should be able to buy them anywhere .

Upgrade to hydraulic or electric steering systems

Back in the 90's I bought a boat with cable steering, when I converted it to hydraulic I cut the cable to get it off too.

Upgrade to hydraulic or electric steering systems

Auto pilot doesn't have anything to do with what form of propulsion you use as long as the vessel moves she will turn the rudder ( main engine has to be in the water ) and procced to the mark you set it up. If you don't have any marks the degrees you set it up for . When I bought mine I bought...

Upgrade to hydraulic or electric steering systems

I have Simrad AP 44 on my 228 , I installed it myself, very easy providing you can hold a spanner .It will do that and you can override it just by turning the steering wheel. I only use it once I get outside, set to my mark and keep a lookout for rogue waves , whales, boats etc. The good thing...

Upgrade to hydraulic or electric steering systems

That will get you hydraulic steering add the same or more for the auto pilot . Forget about the Helm master. Don't get me wrong from my research it is a good set up and not just because of the electric steering, it does a lot of other stuff . I'm interested in one as well but it is not viable as...

    Fuel tank alteration

I think you will find there is a fiberglass bulkhead between the two coffins. My old boat had it and it didn't have the front tank, she did have a 10 g water tank ., My current 2013 boat has one tank (125 G) as far is it can go forward then the 10 g water tank further to the rear then empty...

Anyone live in the Baltimore area? Looking at/would love opinions on possibly buying a GW 228 Seafarer.

Congratulations, you officially joined the GW club. All you have to do is get her home and chase some salmon. I would think it will be at least a 3 day trip?

Anyone live in the Baltimore area? Looking at/would love opinions on possibly buying a GW 228 Seafarer.

I hope all goes well with the sea trial. If they are a reputable GW dealer it should he fine . I noticed they just sold a 08 model 228 with a new 300 hp .

Anyone live in the Baltimore area? Looking at/would love opinions on possibly buying a GW 228 Seafarer.

I'm on the other side of the planet so I can't help you with inspection. The boat looks reasonable in the photos besides the mold but I'm sure you can treat that. The other thing she has bottom paint so maybe she was wet kept. Make sure you check the transom for water intrusion. You can install...

    Looking at this Grady White

Scratches on the bottom are the least of concern, they are not going to stop you from using the boat. The motor is worth zero, the hull could be worth some $$ if the transom and the stringers are not water logged. The trailer looks fine but could be on the lightweight side of things. There are...

    downrigger ball cradle?

I put mine in a custom made ( plastic) container in the port side under the jump seat but I use 8 lb. On the starboard side I keep several 4.5 lb custom made, long lead sinkers. I use them for deep dropping up to 1500'. Again in a custom made plastic container. If I had to keep them in the cabin...

    1987 Grady White 228G

Good luck with the sale Lee. She looks very clean, 4 strokes and lots of extras. I'm sure she will find a good home very soon. Thailand is not far from Malaysia, I hope you make it to Kuala Rompin or Pecan to fight some of these. I can't wait to go back there just for the sails.
