    Raising Engine

I've always heard that the anti-ventilation plate should be above the water at cruise, not below it. Here is mine at 3 RPMS (4500, 5000, and 4000). I've heard that the RPM can change by 200 or so when the engines are raised to pull the A/V plate out of the water...

Which one would you consider buying?

I made a similar choice a year ago but my "old" isn't as old as your "old". My old is a 94 Sailfish with newer 2006 Etecs. The newer boat/motor combos I was looking at were ~2000. When I did my pro-and-con list the 94/2006 was a clear winner for me. A big factor was price. I went over the 94...

    Anchor Pulpit

I used to do that with my 25 foot Wellcraft. I used something like these to keep it tight: http://www.westmarine.com/anchor-roller ... er--383540 http://www.westmarine.com/anchor-roller ... r--9397241

    color of new bow pulpit?

Definitely faded - I have the same issue with some repair work done on my 94. You could try compounding the rest of the boat to see if you can bring some of the original color back.

Thinking of switching gulfstream to Marlin???

Interesting - very fast but isn't that overpropped? Shouldn't those motors get up to 5500 RPM or more? Do overpropped motors use more fuel? (Edit: Oops - I should have read the above post all the way before responding... Sorry..) You might be able to sell it overpowered if you work out the...

Thinking of switching gulfstream to Marlin???

I'm wondering about this also - Sailfish owners usually report 1.5 MPG with those motors and my Sailfish does ~1.2 MPG wide open. It might be worth troubleshooting the low MPG some. Are your motors too low so that the A/V plates are underwater at cruise? Is the boat overweight perhaps due to...

Need a rear bench seat for 1993 25 Sailfish

Congrats on your new Sailfish - great boat! I came very close to buying an 93 I/O but I guess yours isn't an I/O or you wouldn't be looking for a seat. You could try the fold-down style like in the newer Gradys. I just Googled "fold down boat bench seats" and found this...

    New (used) Gulfsteam owner

I would make sure your marine towing insurance it up to date before making a first trip like that with a "new-to-you" boat. Things could show up in the 80-mile run that did not show up in the sea trial, like water in the gas or other fuel problems, engine overheating problems, etc. Good luck...

    New (used) Gulfsteam owner

Congrats on your new Gulfstream...! Depending on where and how you use your boat, you might be able to get away with a "direct discharge" marine head installation which is very easy to do and legal if you are three miles from shore. It is not legal if you are closer then 3 miles from shore so...

21st century gauges for my 20th century boat

Jeff -Thanks. I hope to get in by Memorial day as well. I'm done with this spring's improvements and am ready to start with the usual spring prep. I found the "Sync" page on the gauge and am looking forward to trying it out. Perhaps I'll run that on one gauge and temperature and fuel burn for...

    Would you rent your boat?

I'm surprised there is a market for this. For $650 you get an empty boat and will likely have to pay for fuel as well. If I was on vacation somewhere, I would rather pay a bit more and get a captain with his local knowledge and his fishing gear.

    Transom repair Tampa Bay area

I wasn't suggesting that you overuse the boat or sell it to someone with "no clue" but rather the contrary. I've watched a number of surveyors check out boats and they use the moisture meter as the first check and the hammer for further investigation and final word. Any 25-year-old wood core...

21st century gauges for my 20th century boat

I just replaced my old analog tachs with a pair of I-Command gauges along with a NMEA 2000 network - it was pretty easy to do and they work great. Now I can display data from the motor's computers at these gauges. I'm looking forward to trying to optimize fuel burn and economy with them. My...

    Transom repair Tampa Bay area

Exudedude - if you've had no signs of transom trouble before removing that screw and discovering water, you may not have to do anything right away except go back to enjoying your boat. It takes a long time for saltwater to rot out a transom. Have any new stress cracks been developing around the...

    Gas assisted spring piston needed.

Please post your findings - my 1994 Sailfish didn't come with any gas spring pistons and I would like to add them. The battery hatch came with a spring-style holder (so the hatch will come down and clobber me if I bump it with my elbow). The other three hatches have nothing to hold them up...

    Ox66 lower unit issue

I'm not sure - there seems to be water coming out of a bunch of places when running an outboard on a hose. Take a look at some videos on youtube, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70jVeXJrVmE
