    Battery question!

The house bank on my Guest would not shut off and fried 2 batteries. Engine banks were fine.

    Battery charger recommendation

When my Guest failed I replaced it with a Genius 4 from Batteryguys.com. Its a 4 bank & works great. Installed nearly 3 years ago.

    Poppet valve replacement

Grog's advice on the grommet is right on. Its a rubber washer that the valve sits in and is easy to lose. Unless your overheat alarm sounds at normal idle, save what you bought and flush your motors after each use. My '98 OX 66's needed the valves changed last year.

    Dry Tortugas via Key West

Fuel burn might be an issue. I used to run my 250 Mako cuddy with twin 150 (1988) Johnsons to Bimini from Boca regularly for 10 years. Always took 42 to 48 gals. in about 2.5 hrs for about 65 miles. Once we had a bad chop, nothing big, that slowed me down to where it took 5hrs and 83 gals. On &...

    Dry Tortugas via Key West

I went on the fast cat ferry in May a while ago. Flat calm, but that is May can blow 40 or 0. The cat ran the back side ie north of the Marquesas instead of south. Fairly shallow all the way so worst is a chop as opposed to big swells. Skipper headed due west out of KW harbor until visual...

    LED anchor light?

Boatowners Warehouse has an equivalent for about $6.00. My Perko has 2 bulbs and switching to LED really is a battery saver on multiday trips. I bought an LED for the cabin domelight on ebay and it didn't last. LEDs are getting more reliable, cheaper and brighter.

    225 OX 66 Starter Hesitation

Turned out to be bad battery grounds. Outwardly looked fine but upon removing battery ground cables found a lot of corrosion & deposits on cables and terminal. Cleaned everything up and the hesitation stopped and other DC items are working great.

Bottom paint waterline - Sailfish 27 ft

You should be fine with the line in the pic. Be sure you carry it to the stem & around the transom. A regular level helps at the transom.

Bottom paint waterline - Sailfish 27 ft

Ask the yard to strike the line before lifting. Takes a few minutes and they may do it even though they aren't doing the BJ. If they balk, ask how much. Better to do that than guess.

Bottom paint waterline - Sailfish 27 ft

With the boat afloat, bring along side dock, get out and mark pencil lines about 1" above waterline in numerous places on both sides, stem and transom. Make enough so you can easilly connect with blue tape after haulout. Full fuel & water tanks and normal at dock load before you strike the...

    2000 Gulfstream w Twin ox-66 150's fuel burn??

My 272 with 225 OX 66's gets similar results as your #'s. A friend of mine had a Gulfstream with twin Johnson 150's and would run from the Keys to Bimini, the Berry's and Andros regularly. Never asked about his fuel burn but the boat handled every sea he encountered. Great boat. He now has a 330.

    replace head in 2005 282

Do you have a Jabsco? I have one in my 272 and other than being LOUD and requiring a lot of maintenance when used a lot Jabsco is fine when it's working. Paper gaskets at the lower impeller housing fail periodically and are a PITA to change. I always carry spares because they invariably fail...

    First time bottom paint question

Absolutely, dewax well first. My 272 went from trailer to water. The yard dewaxed then applied 3 coats of epoxy barrier coat before proceeding.

    First time bottom paint question

The time between coats of metal primer & q-tie is short and critical. Check directions before starting that phase.

    First time bottom paint question

Make sure you allow 1inch + above the noted waterline for paint to accommodate different loads. Don't forget your motor parts that will be submerged. Usually lower part of mount, trim apparatus and nose cone of gear box. Treat with pettit metal primer, Q-tie ( follow directions) and top off with...

    bahamas trip from fort pierce

Bahamas trips this time of year are dicey for a small boat. You may get there but if a lingering front comes thru you may have to wait it out. If you go, Palm Beach is much closer to West End.
