Buying a new Canyon 336, options?

There was a thread about this on TheHullTruth. Triple 300s is a no brainer - as you say they are cheaper, lighter, more powerful, more proven and you have more redundancy. Even though I own a Yamaha 350, I'll admit Yamaha has a much longer, better track record with its six cylinder engines.

226/228 owners - do you pull the plug?

West Marine sells the brass drain plugs, $14.50 for a two-pack. I got a pair the last time I was in the store. I keep one in the boat, one on the boat in a storage drawer, and one in my boat tool bag (which lives in my SUV).

What size boat before it changes how you boat?

I could launch, run and retrieve my 22' solo. I don't think I could solo launch my 27' confidently so I now keep it at a dry stack where they launch it on demand. I can run the 27' solo. It feels like 35'-40' might be where solo trips would be challenging but like others here said it is probably...

226/228 owners - do you pull the plug?

Always pull the plug and leave it out if your boat is being stored outdoors. My parents incurred over $4,000 in damage to their Pursuit when it filled with rainwater over the course of a year on the trailer with the plug in.

Options/Electronics to Get on a New Freedom 275

Get a 12" screen. Not sure you need two antennas. You don't need autopilot unless you're fishing 20+ miles offshore. It seems like the ICW would be too crowded for autopilot?

    Keys for cabin?

I bought spare Yamaha keys from SIM Yamaha and spare Southco keys from Boat Outfitters. There were two types of Southco keys on my boat: https://www.boatoutfitters.com/replacement-keys-for-southco-flush-slam-latches for storage lockers and...

275 Tournament falls off plane below 4,000 RPM?

I ended up buying the one I was looking at, a 2011 with an F350A and a Yamaha prop. I get 44 MPH with a full tank of gas and two passengers, no bottom paint, and a tailwind. However that also burns 31 GPH so I'm cruising at 30 MPH where the burn is more like 16 GPH.

Questions from GW Freedom 275 owner

He said use his freshwater system to flush his engine. I don't think the pressure will be high enough for an ideal flush but it would be better than nothing!

Who is looking to upgrade to the King of all Grady's?

Can you imagine buying a boat like that sight unseen? With no financing need? And then selling it because travel restrictions make it temporarily inconvenient to use? The owner must be loaded.

Ski hook on 275 freedom factory hardtop

Interesting idea. I would love to install a ski hook on the hardtop so I could get rid of the sky pylon on my stern and tilt my engine all the way up. (The F350 can't tilt up all the way when the factory ski pylon is installed.) I am not an engineer but I bet the hardtop legs are strong enough...

Looking for the best family boat!

If you're not planning to do any fishing at all then a GW might not be the best brand.

What's up with my gelcoat damaging so easily? Can I use the boat?

Good eye. I am sealing it with silicone for the short term. I will have the engine pulled this winter (when shops are less busy) to replace the transom cap and some of the mounting bolts that are rusty.

What's up with my gelcoat damaging so easily? Can I use the boat?

Here's ding #3 after curing and removing the painter's tape. Like @DennisG01 said I think this qualifies as "good enough for now". I'll get it professionally repaired after the boat is shipped from Maryland to California - I'm sure it'll pick up another ding or two on the journey.

    Towing

I towed my 2011 275 with my father's 2016 Tundra ext cab 4WD with the smaller 4.6L V8 and it was... marginal at best. The frame can handle the boat but that engine cannot. Basically I validated the very different tow ratings that Toyota gives the 4.6 (6500 lbs) and the 5.7 (9900 lbs).

What's up with my gelcoat damaging so easily? Can I use the boat?

Photo narrative time... I'll preface all of this by saying I am a total amateur and will get the hull fixed by a professional eventually. Before I started: I then prepped the area by sanding with rough paper and using a Dremel tool to remove any chipped gelcoat. I cleaned away dust and...

What's up with my gelcoat damaging so easily? Can I use the boat?

100% agreed... I already patched with Marine-Tex and will keep it out of the water until cured.

What's up with my gelcoat damaging so easily? Can I use the boat?

The dark marks were there when I bought it - those are marks from the forklift (it was drystacked and used regularly for 9 years). The damage is all 1/16"-1/8" deep, dime to quarter size at most. Camera may make it look bigger and deeper. I definitely did not hit anything substantial in the...

Yes - my aerator dial will work even if the livewell switch is off.

What's up with my gelcoat damaging so easily? Can I use the boat?

It was on a trailer - this trailer. I am going to patch it with Marine Tex today.
