i put in a new bilge pump this spring. i did add a loop just for this reason. i didnt install the included check valve because it reduces the flow rate of the pump. with the way my loop is, id have to almost submerge the gunnel to get water to back flow into the bilge.

you typically get better mid range economy with more power. you can also turn a bigger prop that can give you better response when docking. you get on plane faster as well. then like chris said, you wont bog down and fall of plane as easily when climbing the back of large waves

any decent local canvas shop should be able to give you better than original.
