1997 Islander 268 Transom Rebuild Project

Signature Fiberglass started on my transom this week. I got my first look today. I like the guy I’m working with. The lower section that looks like wood is actually a fiberglass skin attached to the stringers. The wood veneer attached to it is petrified plywood. They will grind it out and re-use...

?Problem with AGM batteries in new Grady White boats

The internet is full opinions. KISS! Deciding who knows what they are talking about can be difficult. Forget the bot shopping. The Duracell AGM have worked for me.

    Stratoglass on 209 Fisherman?

I don't have that model but what about putting the cleat on the side of the gunnel? I don't like putting it on the top.

    Windlass power

Look in the anchor locker. It's likely close to the windlass itself. 35 amp breaker is the proper breaker size. AI Overview: The Simpson Lawrence Sprint 600 uses a solenoid (contactor) for operation. It is not directly wired to the helm control switches. [1, 2, 3]. I would look at the wire...

    2016 GulfStream 232 windless install

I would install a Blue Sea's surface mount circuit breaker on the battery switch panel near the battery. That is where it belongs from a protection standpoint. You should not be resetting the breaker. I bend at least one anchor each winter in Florida. I only had to reset it once when the anchor...

    2016 GulfStream 232 windless install

The biggest issue with 1/4" 1/2" splice is too much line in the locker. The windlass won't swallow the splice. Sometimes you have to climb up there and knock the pile down. As far as setup her is mine. I installed a pivoting anchor roller what I refinished the bow pulpit. Works great. Used...

    Garmin xsv 7612 transducer unsupported

Basic shoot thru the hull transducer. The 7612xsv supports 2 transducers. You may need a transducer splitter cable. Get the old one working and leave it in the boat. Get something better if you are fishing. Depends on what type of fishing you are doing.

Hardtop Cracking pretty good on both sides

Two cracked rear tower legs? That's odd. Is the hardtop damage from a bridge accident or something else? I did take my tower off the boat a few years ago to refinish the hardtop and tower. Not my area of expertise (welding) but it's not clear to me why they don't re-weld them in place. I think...

1997 Islander 268 Transom Rebuild Project

No. I'm working with my fiberglass guy discussing how best to repair the transom and possibly stringers. That photo shows how the stringers are installed and where the aluminum bracket will connect to. Most fiberglass guys do the transom from outside. Less topside repair. I prefer that he take...

1997 Islander 268 Transom Rebuild Project

Boat is at the shop. Going to start taking things apart this week to see how far I will have to go with this restoration. I found this excellent photo of a restoration of someone else's 268 Islander. !996 model vs. my 1997. Forward/aft tank compartment is different from mine - probably GW...

    Battery Charger

My single bank Noco occasionally lock up (red light on front) when I'm running bait pumps and charging overnight. This battery also handles my bow thruster - which isn't being used overnight. It's likely a combination of the thruster drawing the battery down and the pumps for the baitwells when...

?Problem with AGM batteries in new Grady White boats

I use all AGM batteries on my 1997 Islander with 2006 Yamaha F150's. ProMariner 3-bank HD charger and one Noco single bank for the bow thruster. All these batteries are Duracell AGM Marines - 3x34M AGM and 1x27M AGM. All bought thru Sam's Club. The batteries are made by one of the largest...

    2016 GulfStream 232 windless install

Hatch mounting was the original and best choice for mounting on my boat and probably yours. Perfect drop into rope locker. If you mount to the hatch the backing should go out to all the edges and include the hinges. The windlass won't pull out of the hatch or break the hinges. Hinges are a...

    2016 GulfStream 232 windless install

It’s not the hinge that tears out. The hatch wedging into the recess is quite strong. I was distracted and leaned on “up” instead of down. Tore the hatch out at the hinges. Fabricated a 3/4” plywood as a temp. Then built a mold and fabricated a Coosa board version.

    2016 GulfStream 232 windless install

My windlass was installed on anchor locker hatch. Pulls and drops anchor line into locker. Switched to Lewmar ProFish. Works fine but if you are not careful I have heard you can tear the hatch out!

?Problem with AGM batteries in new Grady White boats

I have had a number of ProMariner chargers over the years. First thing I would check is the inline fuses at each of the batteries. I cooked several of them on different units. They load shift and if certain batteries are run down the amperage would heat up the cheap fuse holders and they would...

    New Grady Paint Color

Thank you! I fish the big tournaments in Cape May area on a friend's boat. I walk the docks and see a couple hundred 50 to 90 foot production to full custom battlewagons each year. Most are painted. A few are wraps. Michael Jordan's $15 million dollar 82' Catch 23 is a wrap (elephant...

Wraps are an alternative but not my first choice. The AwlGrip AwlCraft 2000 is a stunning repairable finish. I couldn’t be happier with it.
