    newbie question on engine "hours"

    I have a 14 foot boat with a 4 stroke yamaha 40 - I just log my hours on a note book, When I see a grady for sale, say a 28 marlin with twin 250's with 500 hours - does this boat have an actual hour meter, like a car odometer, or is this just the hours being reported by the owner/seller? thx!
