I am under contract to purchase a 1989 190 tournament with a 2000 150 V6 Johnson motor. I am trading in a 1997 Sunbird 160 with a 2005 Johnson 2 stroke motor that has frozen pistons. Other than the usual issues with rotten stringers & transoms on a boat of this age, what other things should I be wary of? We are getting the boat for $5k and will have to add a marine radio, antennae, an oil injection system, and a seat so I am planning on another $1k in additional expenses beyond the purchase. I plan to have my marine mechanic check out the motor and electronics before we finalize the deal. We feel like if we get one or two season of use out of the boat before we have to repower than we are ok. Sound like a good deal?

it's a good plan that worked for me on my 86 190 tournament 8 years ago. i have had 8 trouble free years out of a much older johnson motor.

i'd take a look at the condition of the fuel tank through the deck inspection plates and maybe pull the hatch it it looks nasty. i'd also throw the boat and trailer on a highway scale to make sure the hull is not waterlogged.

i would not reconnect the oil injection. it's not that hard to mix oil yourself. exhibit a would be my 1985 johnson 120 which came disconnected and still has perfect compression eight years later.

Thanks for the info..I would love 8 more years out of a 2000 motor but have never been that lucky with the Johnsons brand. We had the same boat purchased brand new in 1998 and went thru (2) 90 HP Johnsons, the first one blew up after 7 years. The 2nd motor, also purchased brand new in 2005, blew up last year and that was after we rebuilt the lower unit 3 years ago.
