The 2004 motors have just over 300 hours and the port motor is overheating. The mechanic replaced the water pump and t-stat and no change. He thinks it is a clog higher in the motor and thinks it is not worth trying to fix (given the age of the motor). Quoted new motors (2 x Yamaha 150's) at 31k.
The Boat is in otherwise good shape for it's age, but I was strongly considering an upgrade in the near future to something in the 30' range. We go 30 - 50 miles offshore regularly. I am not sure whether I should spend the $ on the new motors, sell it as is or something else.
I am very interested in getting the opinions of some of you more experienced captains.
Thanks for any help.
Patrick - I'm a little late on this response but I'll post it anyway. I'm working with my Yamaha mechanic to service both lower units before my Winter Florida trip. I managed to snake them out with heavy monofilament and they work good now. I'm suspicious of my tell-tales had impeller debris in them. He said he uses caned compressed air (while the motors are running) to clear the lines. He told me he has never had a engine block plugged. If it were mine I wouldn't hesitate to use heavy duty compressed air to clear the blockage. You have nothing to loose.
My experience with F150's is the thermostats can fail. Usually they freeze "open" (motors run cool" but I'm sure they could fail the other way. Changed thermostats twice and guessed wrong both times!
Water pump should be rebuilt with kit (plates, housing and impeller - under $100 each). Then I would test in the water - I use a double hose, some use a tank but I would put in the water and see if it overheats.
Testing on a garden hose usually leads to overheating.
At 300 hours you should not have a problem - my F150's have 2,400 hours on each of them - and they run like new.
When I have "weird" problem I always ask myself - "Do I know more about the problem than the guy I talking to?". Usually the answer is "YES!". Get involved, ask questions, challenge answers you don't believe.
As above - find another mechanic.
I wouldn't give up on a motor with 300 hours on it.
