Reading the tread about replacing the balsa core of a 1999 306 Bimini i got worried that my 2011 306 Canyon has also balsa wood in the sides.

Does someone know if and if so, when GW changed from balsa core sides to full fiberglass sides?
I understood that GW uses wood for hull only in transom and probably floor, plus many other places like console, but it's plywood, not balsa.
My lady need to have a transom repair job this winter and if sides on mine are still balsa cored i would need to verify that well and in case re-bed all thru-hulls and a good idea would be all gunnel mounted hardware to avoid that water enter from above.

Thanks so much

Chris

You need to replace the transom on a 2011 306 Canyon? What's up?

Replaced all my above water thru hulls a few years ago when I painted the hull. I don't remember the hull being that thick. It's possible the hull sides are cored to a point but I doubt the curved bow sections are. I'll check as best I can.

There is swelling from transom top where the notch start, on both sides of the splashwell.
Usual problem with bang cap and spider cracks around the round corner of transom notch.
I think i don't have to replace the full transom, just two stripes where swelling (plus safety margin) is happening.
This was done on a 2006 306 Canyon i checked out at GW importer, he showed me a invoice from a french shipyard replacing some wood port side under the notch.
I know in Olbia a boat builder and will ask them to evaluate and then do the repair, they should be able to do that in a perfect way.

There no no signs of wet core in hull sides, they look perfectly fine but if cored then i will pay extra attention.

I don't know that they ever stopped using balsa in the hull sides of larger boats. Solid glass would increase the weight quite a bit. Maybe they went to a foam core?
Its pretty easy to see it. They only spray it with white gelcoat where a customer might see it(bilge, battery compartment, anchor locker). Otherwise you can see the balsa right thru the inner glass. Just open up a hatch or remove a drawer unit anywhere that gives you a look at the inside of the gunnels
