Hi all. I sold my 208 over the weekend and have been trying to decide between an Islander or a Sailfish. Both have their pros and cons for my situation and I've weighed out every last detail. Except one. Is the ride in choppy seas that much better in a Sailfish over an Islander? Is it a tremendous difference? Thanks in advance for any help. Have a great season. (To those of us who call boating seasonal. :lol: )

two different boats in length/weight which will handle a bit differently in different seas;

aside from trailering (which favors an 8 1/2 ft beam on the islander), if you can afford it, always go with the bigger boat....my $.02

Wow, you're a mindreader. I'm ok with the cabin on the Islander and I think I would have bought it by now, but the Admiral has been saying all along that the cabin needs to be bigger. Any thoughts about that?
 
Better get the bigger cabin. If she isn't happy now, it likely won't get better if you find yourselves cramped for room. I would expect the ride of the Sailfish to be better given the substantial additional amount of weight.
 
You may not realize but it has already been decided.

She will be getting the Sailfish.

Whatever you do, at all costs, never let her board a Marlin or 33 Express.

Better to keep the Admiral "un-informed".
 
I have the 272 with 200 hp HPDI motors. The 272 has a step up hull in the stern. Up until the new lighter weight V6 Yamaha 4 stroke motors you would probably have a weight problem with repowering. The 282 is basically the same hull but with a full running bottom that seems to provide the flotation needed for the heavier 4 strokes that were available prior to this year. If I were getting a new boat , to me, I would opt for the 282. I love the boat/motor combination that I presentle have,but I am linited to options in the future.
 
bigger is better

Recommend bigger.....my Admiral was not happy with the cabin on the Sailfish, hence the Marlin. I will say I am much happier with the Marlin also. Sometimes the Admiral does good.
 
I don't think a Marlin is reasonable since the OP is talking about regular trailering. The cabin in my 2002 282 is "adequate" for 2. Hands down the larger Marlin has a much larger cabin due in part to the increased beam and length, but the 10.5' beam in particular, although not impossible to trailer is more difficult and requires obvious permits.
The Marlin is also heavier than the Sailfish and would definitely require a one ton truck or better for proper towing.

The Sailfish beam is 9.5' and i tow it with a 3/4 ton truck. I'd be happier to tow using a one ton, but the 3/4 ton diesel is OK.
I tow without a permit as it really doesn't look over width, but add another foot and it would be really wide and make my butt really pucker in some of those single lane mountain corners i have to go thru.
