Grady guys with Trolling Motors;

Starting to trouble shoot my 2001 T9.9ELHZ Yamaha Outboard cooling issue. electric start four stroke series

it appears that I have a clog in the cooling system. Perhaps salt build up?

Had a buddy begin to trouble shoot.

Ran the motor on rack with muffs and hose water. water pump works, bringing water up to the engine powerhead. The issue appears to be where water enters the housing for the two cylinders. One appears to be cooling, the other not. Buddy pulled the hoses to each, sees water flowing from one, but not the other.

Tried soaking with some LymeAway to see if we could loosen the clog in the housing tube.

Motor came with the boat I bought 7 years ago, on a trolling bracket, folding style. Previous owner had one of those EZ Steer arm brackets installed as well. Had no need for it till now. Stored it winterized ever since.

Any advice?

Posted this on THT as well, but no responses

Sounds like you are going in the right direction. I've never had a clog that far up, but could certainly be one. You should be able to run small diameter flexible cable through it and see if you can break it free. Just go easy.

Another possible cause is the impeller debris. If you wait till the impeller falls apart before you replace it - then you have to get all those little pieces out. They won't make it past the thermostat. This happened on my Honda.

Start at the intake screens - pull those off and remove any rubber bits, then take a look at the impeller and housing, finally pull off the thermostat housing and run the engine with the ear muffs on - the water will push out the remaining bits from the cooling passage.

double check its not thermostat causing the problem, when confirmed try using a piece of weed eater line and push it into the head after pulling off the rubber hose that feeds your water indicater then use a bit of air , Yamaha 9.9 kickers are very prone to this specially if they sit for a while
