Just North of me a ways at Clearwater Florida, a fishing guide had 6 people out about 100 miles and caught some nice fish. On the way back the boat was hit by lightening and went dead in the water. The skipper was knocked out for just a bit but was right back up and triggered his ACR. Coast Guard showed up with a helicopter and picked up all seven people unhurt. Boat is being towed in. What a perfect outcome, all due to a little 4 ounce knick knack you can carry in your shirt pocket! How great is that?

Yeah, sorry, I misspoke. The piece I saw on the news showed an ACR brand PLB. The same one I carry. They hit a satellite just like an EPIRB but have a lot shorter life span for sending out position from what I understand.

Those are great - one of many things on the boat that cost money and you hope to never use/need. Good to read a story like this.

I bought ACR package with both PEPIRB and EPIRB.
Different boat. Grady White rescue. Positive flotation. Great feature of our boats.

GW is no better than other boats. Most have basic flotation which likely turtle in the water. Some small models have level floatation. I’m skeptical on these models. Have required safety gear, ditch bags, Pfds, plb/epirb.

20' and under are the only ones that float level. All the others will turn over if flooded in any kind of sea.

I did see on the tag my boat has basic flotation.
I don't believe my 268 Islander would float level with all the weight of the engines, tools, batteries, etc in the aft section of my boat. As long as it doesn't go straight to the bottom I'll be happy. Hopefully I never get to test! I do carry all safety gear but no raft. I'm also fishing coastal waters in Florida and New Jersey - no canyon running with this boat.
The ABYC standard are available to member only so I can't see full specs but it did say it applies to boats 26 foot or less.
