What would you recommend as a cost effective radar system to purchase for my 232 Gulfstream? Need it for the fog that suddenly appears out of no where and night trips back to the dock.

Lowrance 3G if you can find it. 4G newer, slightly improved, more expensive.

Fantastic unit for low visibility piloting. Get a Simrad rate compass for chart overlay and you are all set.

What gps/ff are you running? If you already have a mfd screen you will need to buy a radar of the same brand. If you don't have an mfd, your options are many. A reasonable starting point would be a Garmin 740S screen and a Garmin 18HD radar unit. Both can be bought at West Marine for $2499, other places could be less.

Presently have a FURUNO GP1850 GPS/FISH FINDER...........Stick with Furuno?

Thanks,

Tom

This Furuno does not support radar so you will need a new chartplotter that does. If you are near a Grady dealer I'm sure they will be happy to discuss this with you. West Marine also has a good selection of electronics that you can view and play with. It's important that you get to know the units so you can make the best decison on ease of use, size, buttons vs touch screen, features like blue tooth, etc. Once you make your choice, than shop arond for best deal.

I like Garmin for it's ease of use and simple install. Others are just as fond of Lowrance, Raymarine, etc.

Good luck.

Lowrance 3G is outstanding for close up detail. You will not be disappointed. 4G is even better, but not so much worth it for most folks for the extra cost.
Thrilled with my HDS10 with 3G radar!
