Looking at a 28 footer. What year did they make these and what kind of engine/s are in it? Anyone have experience with one? How much fuel does it hold?

My buddy has an early 90s Sailfish with single diesel. I beleive that there weren't many diesel Sailfishes made, less that 50 at most. I think his motor is a Volvo. The gas tank is the same as the gasoline Sailfish. The diesel is a heavy motor, the total boat weighs in at about 10,000 pounds

Check the Grady White site and look through the different year catalogs.

You should be able to find all the specs your asking for there. If not give them a call on Tuesday, they will help you.

Man, I would like to see them make another hull with twin turbo diesel inbords. Like a Marlin or on the Express.

I do not even think there were 50 made of this model, 50 would be the max number I wouls suspect. It was a volvo engine with a duoprop outdrive. I believe the engine was a single 265hp Volvo KAD44. It topped out around 30mph and cruised around 20-22mph. The single engine and low hp for that model made it a sluggish boat and therefore not popular, also moving a lot of weight in a boat that size in a boat designed for a totally different propolsion system did not make it a good candidate for a diesel I/O for ride quality. Performance was good when uit comes to efficiency, but speeds stunk. I've heard from many they do not ride great since the hull was designed to ride totally differently then how it performs with the diesel. Persoanally if I wanted a boat with diesels in the 28 ft range I'd buy a Carolina Classic, it might burn some more fuel, but the ride will be 100x better, they are tanks and have more usable cockpit space with no big engine box. Only advantage the Grady has is the aft berth, but unless you really plan to sleep the boat with a few people, then this space ends up being storage or not used anyways. I would highly advice a sea trial if your still interested in this model, I've heard too many say they were unpleased with how it handled, not sure what they had privious though and what they honestly compared it to or expected, for your needs it might suit you fine, especially depending on what you might be coming from. I've been on a few I/O Grady's over the years, and not 1 drove anything like their outboard version, a few actually ran better since they had more weight and stayed in the water more, others ran like junk. Have not personally been on a 274 other then at a show years back when it was brand new. The idea is great and the efficiency is hard to beat, plus Volvo makes a great diesel engine that is very reliable.

The diesel Sailfish was not a popular model to say the least!
Where is this boat you are looking at? There has been the same one for sale
for years and years here on LI! I've seen them advertise it with prices from
$74k down to mid $50ks. Like 22 said if you're in the market for a diesel boat there are better choices.

Good luck!

As I remeber better, I think he said there were 14 of them made. I have sailed on his boat many times. It is a bit slow but is pretty stable for fishing and a easy to dock. The duo prop makes all the difference in handling. Fuel economy is very good but on the down side, diesel maintenance and repair parts are expensive. Engine noise is on the high side.

Diesel Grady

I am the proud new owner of a 1999 274 Sailfish. I am absolutely in love with the boat. This boat was originally equipped with a Volvo Penta Diesel motor in an I/O configuration. I purchased the boat from the original owner late last Nov. He had alot of problems with the motor and finally repowered the boat in fall 07' with a V/P gas motor. I love the added room at the stern without the outboards in the way. I shook the boat out on two 5 runs last fall in rough LI sound seas and through Plum Gut and I thought the boat handled incredibly. I've been out three times this spring including through the trechorous Shinecock Canal and inlet and it's unbelievable. I got a great deal on a meticulously kept boat with everything new from the props to the controls and I could not be happier. I think spellman's Marina in Hampton Bays is selling a 274 for an owner as well. Any questions let me know.

There's one for sale on Long Island advertised in Fisherman, you want the phone number? Ad claims primo condition, new outdrive.

Quote "8 gph" on fuel in ad.
