I am interested in knowing if anyone knows if you can power an electric reel by hooking it up to the 12V power outlets in the console of a 2005 GW 283 Release. They look as if they are wired pretty heavily. Rather than cut an opening in the console to access the batteries directly, I am hoping that these outlets can handle the load of an electric reel.

Thanks for any and all input.

What do you mean by "..hooking it up"?

If you mean by using a simple 12vdc convenience outlet and the matching plug on the cable to your reel, then I don't think so. I haven't seen a convenience outlet set yet that is rated at the current needed by an electric reel when there is a load on it.

We have two Electra-Mates on the boat. Both are wired to the small Hubbell male plug that looks like a smaller version of a shore-power plug. We use a small battery box from Electra-Mate http://www.elec-tra-mate.com/acc.html with a 33AH gel battery inside. We fish all day with no problem.

A distinct advantage of this type of arrangement is that you can take it with you to other boats, as we have on several occassions. :)

This company in miami has great deals and is very good to deal with, here is the link if you want to hardwire a setup.

I have a dual battery setup where only one battery is used at a time, with group 24 batteries I have yet to come close to discharding one, even on deepdrop trips.
