Installing a new stanchion plate?

I am getting ready to install a stanchion plate in the floor over the rigging compartment of my 27' Sailfish. This will involve coring a 5.5" hole in the deck. Could anyone tell me if these decks are solid glass? or do they have a wood core that will have to be sealed? If sealing is required what is recommended?
