I just picked up a new ride and have noticed that VHF that came with the boat (in the radio box under the T Top) seems to pick up static on each of the radar sweeps and whenever I hit the trim button. Is there a filter or something which I should install somewhere to prevent this? Or is this radio a piece of crap. It is a Standard Horizion. I have always been an Icom fan, so I am almost looking for an excuse.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS said:
First thing to check is your ground/negative wire. If it shows aged, change it.
Also check the connection for corrosion.

And the connections and wire to the antenna.

Thanks everyone- I visually checked everything and gave the gentle /tug and wiggle technique, to everything I could get a hand on. Everything so far looks good, but ...I need to spend a bit more time chasing wires, without the kids on board to help.

You should undo all connectors and look for corrosion.
