Hi fellow Grady owners.

I have a 2007 282 Sailfish and was informed by the guy who scrubs the bottom I’m missing a trim tab. Explains a lot about recent handling issues. What I’m hoping to get info is has anyone else had this issue? I’m told the whole tab and hinge is gone but the actuator is still there.

If you have a 282 Sailfish, would you mind sending a picture of your tab with the hinge in the photo? I need to pull the boat out but that is a whole ordeal here at my marina and want to ensure I get the right tabs prior to pulling the boat out. My memory is telling me the hinge had a single row of screws but the tabs I received based on Grady support and Bennett have a double row of screws.

Thanks in advance. I wish I had an underwater camera so I could look myself prior to pulling the boat.

Well it helps to know where you are if you are wishing for a camera. You could always borrow a GoPro.

It's almost certainly a Bennett trim tab. Cylinder may be ok (broken tab hinge). Your boat should have a full hull and tab should be out the back of the boat. Check size in the water. Mounting holes are irrevelant. You are going to have to repair, re-glass and drill new holes. My concern is how/why did the screws fall out?

I’m in the SF Bay Area, Northbay.

Yeah, fully expecting hull repairs but for this query hoping to compare to what I have received.

Thanks

Most certainly a Bennett if original equip. It is possible that electrics were added but still unlikely. It is pretty easy to tell by looking in the bilge for the hydraulic pump or even by the sound when activating.

If an inspection shows that the tab broke off of the hinge and left the transom hinge part still present, that is a good thing. If the entire tab and hinge came off and all that is left are screw holes in the transom, that could be a bad sign since it may indicate a soft transom. As mentioned, a haul out and inspection is advised.

You could look at your other tab? Pretty quick and easy to do if you just jump in the water. Seems like this approach would be the most productive for you.

I would get the boat out of the water asap, though.

Grady White is fantastic for support. I called them up and they provided me the Bennett kit number for that year and hull. I then called Bennett and they provided the part numbers for the tabs and actuators. I’ve purchased and received the new tabs and actuators but they look different than what I recall seeing on my boat. As an example, the zincs are in a different location and different style.

As it is a process at my marina to pull the boat, I’m hoping to ensure I have the right parts before doing that. There is very limited space for boats and the harbor master is very strict on time on the hard. If I have the wrong tabs, I’ll need to put the boat back in the water and pull it again when the correct parts are here.

Hope this helps to explain why I’m hoping someone has a 282 in their backyard and can take a photo and send it over.

Thanks very much! Is there a story behind why this is off the boat? It looks like they also used some sealant between the hinge and the boat. Really appreciate you sending this. Super helpful!
Yeah water meter show some moisture in the area, so I pulled them, cleaned everything used vacuum to draw out moisture, and reinstalled.
