Hello everyone, I'm a new member from Washington and I just bought a 98 22' Seafarer. Looking forward to upgrading it and making it even more of a fishing machine, it already has a ton of mojo.
Question, why is the back end open with a gate(?) that drops down without any kind of seal so water can flow right in if backing down? I plan on putting a offshore bracket on it and then closingit up next winter but will just seal it up with some ruber and silicone in the meantime.

I am thinking that it is for hauling in those massive fish you will catch!;)

I bet the smarter folks on here will chine in, but wanted to say “Welcome” and I would call Grady and ask them before sealing up something they designed. I seriously doubt anyone is up there going “oh crap! We left a hole in that model!” Heh;)

Sounds like you have a 226 Seafarer. The splash gate is just that, to knock down splashes. It's designed to drop so you can tilt your motor up without hitting the motor well.
 
The older model splash gate also allows easier access to the swim platform when diving or snorkeling. I sort of miss it on my newer 226.

It worked pretty well when backing down to set the anchor. But that was in the Gulf of Mexico. For Pacific swells, you have the right idea to enclose the transom. That's why you see mostly 228s out there.
 
Some of us like to fish over the motors without the need of a 12 foot surf rod. Old school I guess. Dinosaurs they call us....

Congratulations on your new boat! I purchased a 226 (1984 model) that had the same cut out transom. I didn't care for it, and I had a transom that was wet (water intruded into the transom). I opted to enclose the transom when I redid it. I also purchased a custom marine welding flotation bracket. The nice thing is I had it designed to have more flotation and provide better balance with my new motor (Mercury Verado 300) which weighs more than outboard motors did in 1984.

You can checkout my playlist for some of the things I did. I really love the Seafarer. I fish with 7 and 8'6" rods - trolling on Lake Erie. I have no issues fishing around the motor. And, I can step out on the platform as necessary (kids love diving off it as well).
