I have a 1988 GW Sailfish. It is currentlly powered with twin 200HP Yamaha 2-stroke. The transom is cut way and twin 200HP four strokes are too heavy. I would like to repower with a single 300HP Yamaha 4-stroke..Has anyone out there done this or would the boat be underpowered...Please give me advice...The hull is in great shape and I hate not to keep her up...The wife says sell the boat and buy somethiing newer.

I never heard of anyone using a single 300 OB, a 350 might do it. Twin Zuke 175's seem to work well, HPDI 200's (new or a used set), 200 ETEC's, the 4 cyl 200 Verados, or 200 Opitmaxes.

Im guessing that if you give up 25% of your horsepower and the maneuverability of twins for a single you wont be happy.

I don't know what size the boat is but would twin 150s work? I would rather have twin 150s then a single 300.

Sorry meant to mention that they would save you about 250 lb (476 lb ea) over the 200s (593 lb ea)

4 cyl Verados are 525 pounds, 600 pound 4 strokes are just too heavy.

I would check with your dealer - I have heard them tell people the big engines have way too much torques for the older transoms to handle - weight is not the only issue you have to consider with the the big boys

First things first ... Your wife says "buy a newer boat" and you're asking about repower!?

Seriously, I don't think you'd be happy with an F300, at least not the 4.2 6 cyl. version. And I think Grady will say that the transom is not made for a Yammy V-8 300 or 350. The suggestion of 200 HPDI's or eTec's seems like a good way to go.

What's wrong with the 200's?? Burning too much fuel?? Can buy a lot of gas and oil for what a big thumper cost. Even switching to the HPDI's won't save you enough fuel money to justify the expense any time soon. I believe your 200's are about 434 Lbs each right? Don't think you can get any better with the weight to HP ratio. But on the other hand, if the boss has given you the green light on a new boat...dude what are you waiting for?
