If it is appropriate to do such things here.

A recent experience with the GPS Store causes me to want to let others know.

My experience is that their staff are allowed to use their common sense and do the right thing, regardless of what store policy says. There was no "I have to talk with my supervisor", they simply jumped to doing the right thing.

Obviously, "the right thing" to me was to refund my purchase. And send me a postage-paid shipping label to return the item.

Long story short, I ordered a Garmin 800 AIS Transceiver. Decided it would be nice to be "seen" by all the tugs on an upcoming trip from Nashville, TN to Huntsville, AL.

The outer package arrived damaged. Everything inside looked unscathed. Still, I took pictures and sent them to The GPS Store saying that the Garmin looked fine and that I'd go ahead and install it on my boat.

Install it I did and got nothing from the Garmin to indicate that it was receiving power.

Contacted The GPS Store who suggested connecting the unit's power and ground wires, and the optional yellow (on-off switch) wire to the same positive and ground posts on the fuse block as the VHF radio the Garmin unit acts as an antenna splitter for.

I did as they asked. VHF radio came on just fine. Again, not a single light on the Garmin unit. I took pictures of the wiring and the two units together.

The GPS Store first offered an exchange and would even send the new unit before they received the old unit. That was a nice offer, but I am out of time. I have too many other things to get ready on the boat to revisit this installation. So they offered to just send me the return label. As soon as they receive the unit, they do a refund - which they did.

Their policy, by the website, is that once a unit is put to use, they will do an exchange in the first 45 days (which I was well within). They never even brought that up.

I have bought from them a few times in the past. But let's not tell my wife how much these simple little boxes cost. As she is (finally) joining me on this trip, to see fall colors, it is all about her safety - absolutely. And not because I needed an advanced safety toy. And certainly not because these mile-long tugs and barges give me nightmares...
