One of the plastic thru hull fittings just disintegrated on my 228 and I will take that as a warning to replace all the below water fittings. Measuring the old fitting, its barbed section is 1 1/8” and the threaded section is 1 1/4”. But I cannot seem to find such a fitting in stainless or bronze. Anyone know a source? I assume all the rest of the fittings are 1 1/8” as well but haven’t yet confirmed that.

GemLux for above water stainless. Below waterline should be bronze. GW typically uses several different size thru hulls.

I replaced all the thru hulls on my 1990 Seafarer 228 with stainless steel 1" and 1 1/2" thru hulls from Replacement Boat Parts .com. I store my boat on a trailer. 1" Part# PRE56548 and 1 1/2" Part# PRE56551. It was very difficult to remove and install due to very limited space. I could only get one hand into the forward spaces, so I "resined" a quarter into the slot on the hose clamp in order to tighten it. The stainless thru hulls look like jewelry when installed.

I use a step drill bit from the outside to remove the "mushroom" then push the hose inside and remove the barb. If you can get the hose off first it's easier because you have something to "wrench" and pull against.

Thruhulls should not be over caulked. Just right amount so it squeezes out. Don't get caulk all over the inside nut otherwise, if you ever have to remove, it (especially with metal thru hulls) it will be nightmare.
