Steering Fluid

I've got a small bit of play in my steering, a small skipping feeling. I want to top off the fluid and bleed the line before diagnosing further. What fluid would I put in - the motor is a 1998 yamaha 250 2 stroke. No idea what steering system I have (Seastar or not?).
Do I use hydrolic fluid? Power Steering fluid? Any brand??

Go to marine store and get a quart bottle of teleflex seastar/baystar fluid.

I think you should first check to see exactly what type of steering you actually have. Then do some inspection on the unit. If it is Seastar hydraulic, you can check the fluid level by removing the filler hole knob on your helm unit. You should also check to make sure the cylinder slide and assembly are properly greased and that the slide is not damaged or pitted.
Also make sure your connections are tight and torqued down properly.

1. check what type u have;
2. use the appropriate sea-star hyd fluid;
3. download the guide from teleflex - seastarsteering.com
4. follow procedure in the manual to fix/top-off;
5. get mechanic to fix if u find a major problem or is too complicated;
