At idle and low RPM my port engine tach works fine. At high RPM and higher RPM cruise it often "bounces" or will cut out and go to "zero". Is the problem usually the tach, the connections or the sending unit on the engine? I have Mercury 250hp EFI Offshores. (2 strokes of course)

analog or digital gauges? Sounds like a ground is vibrating at higher rpms.

Check connections at the sender too as well as at the console. It can be a bad signal wire as well as a ground.
If you rev the motor in neutral and it doesn't happen, the problem is probably not at the motor end.
Try wiggling the connections while the motor is reved up a bit in neutral to see if you can locate a bad connection.
