Took notice that my throttle and shift cables out by the outboards are frayed. I ordered 4 new cables (i have twin yamaha outboards) The boat is 33 years old with the original helm control levers. Would it also be a good idea to replace that as well? I have to pull it out anyways to gain access the cable housing cover. I've seen the yamaha control for 500 to 700 bucks while the knock offs are around 250

I would do all of the cables first. Thats a lot of money to replace the control if you don't need it. You can add some white grease while you're in there.

I definitely wouldn't replace the box if it didn't need it. Once the cables are disconnected, you'll get a good idea of how smoothly it operates. As noted, grease up what you can while you have in on your workbench.
