Yamaha mEchanic said Imy trim seals and rams were leaking a bit on my twin f225s. Price for the job was estimated at $1400 with parts at 800 and rest labor. He and another guy could not get the old trim rods out and said they were seized and said they may have to torch them to remove them. The next day he said his boss said that they no longer do torcing to remove the rams because they had one explode.

Now he recommend to get all new assemblies at $3200 a piece plus labor. The tool he originally used to try and get the rams/seals off was the proper one recoommended by Yamaha.

He also said I could probably go thru the 2014 season without any issues but should get them done inspiring 2015.

Now I am looking at 6400 plus 600 labor.....seems a bit crazy to me! Any of you guys had this done or otherwise have experience with it?

I just did the short twin rams on mine. The one that doesn't tilt the engine up all the way.
They would dribble a little oil.
Got the tool from the guy who makes on E-bay with the 4 pins.
With a short pipe it works great. There is a lip seal in the head and an o-ring under the cap.
Very easy to fix yourself.
You could get an extra cap if you need to strike the head head straight down to free like you do with some flange type plugs.

At first I thought I could spin the cap off easily with a hammer and chisel in the pin hole, boy was I wrong.
This is one job were you do need the right tool.

I had the rod wipers fail on my E-Tecs and fixed them for $10 with a little "outside of the box" thinking. Or more like outside the cylinder thinking. Rather than trying to take the whole thing apart to replace the wipers, I slid some new wipers over the rods and glued them in place with 4200. It's not pretty but it worked. I'm going to redo it and the others with black adhesive and masking tape to keep it from looking so messy. In my case, the rams were not leaking. I'm hoping I replaced the wipers soon enough to protect the internal seals from damage. Thread is here, photo in the last post.

I had a weeping seal on one of my mercury's a couple years ago. It cost me about $15 for the seal kit and to fix it myself.

You need a new mechanic. And what they are now proposing @$ 7,000 (you can bet it will be higher with these guy's) is completely unacceptable, ridiculous.
