What does the small box with a red x in it mean?

When trying to view pics on some of the posted threads, there sometimes appears a small white box with a red x inside it instead of the pic. From the replies, it appears that others are able to view the pic. Clicking on the box yields no results. Any thoughts/suggestions?

It's a broken or corrupt image link. Possibly the host where the photo resides is not functioning or there is a security issue with public viewing. Usually the latter.
