There are access doors in that area -
I have never seen downriggers mounted on a 265.

I am thinking about amidships...

just at beginning of cockpit, a foot or two behind where the outriggers are mounted. That is where my buddy mounted his on a 27 Sailfish. What do you think?

5-3/4 inches is the max gunwale width on surface,

Underneath the gunwale there is only 5-1/2 inches and you need room for the nuts/washer. I mounted my Canon swivel mount and the base is 5". Just about everyone in the Pacific Northwest mounts them toward the rear of the gunwale, which helps to keep the downrigger line away from the motors on turns.

i just bought my sailfish 25 and had to get downriggers. i chose scotty but i am sure cannon will have the same stuff. look for gimbal mounts. i like them as you dont have to drill holes in your boat. the mount just slides in your pole holders. that system works well on my boat, hope this helps you out
