I get a guilty pleasure watching boat fails on youtube and I have to believe that a lot of the "brain off" is more like "booze in". I am not judging people for drinking, I do it at night, at home, when I'm not running anything. I will never drink on a boat I'm running, I think you'd have to be a little crazy to do that, forget booze, if I just take my eyes off the ocean while under way the ocean instantly starts to beat me up. I can't imagine trying to deal with our ocean with some booze messing with your judgement.

Drinking starts after you clean the last fish at home (for me). Gotta pamper what brain cells I have left
I'd be lying if I said I've never consumed an adult beverage, or even two, while out boating before. I think there's a big difference though between an adult beverage or maybe two vs being buzzed and/or completely wasted. I'm a big guy at almost 300lbs and have a bit of a seasoned liver, so one or two adult beverages, depending on the concoction as well as the potency of said beverages, I might not even feel anything. A Corona Premier at 4% alcohol isn't going to hit very hard, if at all, after only two of them like it would having consumed two or even three double or triple Moscow Mules will. Another big part of it depends obviously on food and if you have a full stomach or if you've yet to eat anything all day. I usually won't ever do more than a beer or two though, especially if it's my boat and/or I'm in charge of everyone else on board. If one of my buddies, my uncle or another extremely competent driver is driving then I might indulge a bit more. That being said... fortunately the fishing has been pretty decent up here over the last couple of years to where we aren't usually out for more than 2-3 hours or so. Knock on wood. And while that is plenty of time to get a nice little buzz going... at 5-6 am I'm still usually drinking my coffee and trying to wake myself up as well as figure out how I made it out to the boat. Alcohol is usually about the last thing on my mind at that point as I'm trying to clear away the mental fog. The YouTube boating fails are absolutely hilarious and definitely have a guilt pleasure of watching those as well. I think most of those the people operating the boats must be absolutely hammered and/or just the biggest idiots in the world.

Mustang, not getting on your case in the slightest, you seem like a solid dude. My main fishing buddy, who has been doing it for decades, enjoys a beer on his boat and I don't judge.

That said, here is why I don't. I used to be a pretty decent pool player, not pro level but better than most of the non pros. I could hold a table at a bar all night. I was in a league so I practiced a bunch. One of my life long friends also played and we practiced together a lot, thousands of racks in a year. We had very different styles, I liked to put shit on the ball to throw the other ball into the pocket, he just loved those long length of the 9 foot table shots. When we were on our game, we could do a dozen racks of nine ball and it would be 6-6 or 5-7 or 7-5. Never more than that. So for fun, I had a half of a pint of beer to see what that would do. He won 11-1. Did another 12, he won 10-2.

I felt absolutely nothing, it was 1/2 of a pint of beer. Yet I sucked. Yeah, we were playing at a high level so maybe that played into it, but still. To this day I have a strong appreciation for how much I sucked with just a tiny amount of booze. And I think boating is a lot like high level pool, you need to be on your game.

I think all of you have more experience than me and you can have a beer on your boat and it will be fine. Me, I know my limits, I'll have that beer when I'm home.

No worries, and definitely not enough to lose any sleep over. I guess I'm the complete opposite. A beer or two makes me do much better at doing just about anything including bowling, darts, beer pong, corn hole, dancing and just about anything else. Admittedly I've never been very great at pool but yes, even at pool I'm still slightly better at it after a beer or two. Not trying to condone drinking while boating or anything, that being said, as stated above I have done it on occasion.
