Boat: 2021 Adventure 208 w/ hard top, typically loaded with 2-4 people + ~200 lbs of ice and fishing gear.
Engine: Yamaha F200 (4 cylinder)
Typical conditions: Offshore fishing in Hawaii (North Shore), 2-4’ wind chop/ short period wind swell with large winter ground swells.

Boat came with the Yamaha Reliance 3 blade: 14.25 / 17p. While this gave me optimal WOT RPM’s (high 5000’s from what I remember) and a top speed of ~40 knots. I rarely operate in glassy conditions to use that top end and troll 7 to 10 knots 90% of the time. It also gripped TERRIBLY in rougher conditions. Down swell I had little control and I would struggle to stay on plane when I was trying to stay at cruising speeds in rougher conditions. It also cavitated and slipped a lot in certain conditions.

Next prop: I tried the Powertech OFS4 4 blade 15.25 / 15p. Immediately better handling, got on plane so much easier, stayed on plane, and gripped tremendously. Problem: it is just too much prop for my I4. I only got 4800 rpm at WOT, and topped out at about 28 knots. I also felt a little bit of vibration. Sold it locally to try to find a 4 blade that wasn’t as extreme of a jump.

Current Prop: Turning Point 4 blade 14.5 / 17p. I’ve been running this one for over a year and got it in aluminum as a test run (will buy a stainless prop again when I find one that works). This prop did close the gap, but just not enough. 5,000 rpm at 30 knots on flat, glassy day. Still have good grip and like the performance overall, but I want more RPM’s and available power when it’s needed. I also don’t want to continue using props that have too much drag on my engine long term.

Has anyone had success using the offshore Yamaha 3 blades versus the reliance on the I4 Yamahas? Any other prop selection ideas? Turning Point makes a 14” 4 blade, but only in a higher pitch (19-21), which would probably even out with my current prop (less diameter but less RPM due to pitch). Has anyone seen a massive difference in performance with the tried and true Reliance props by just changing the pitch?

I’m starting to believe there just isn’t a 4 blade out there that works on the I4 Yamaha.

Fingers crossed my next prop is the ticket ‍

Have you tried reaching out to Ken at Prop Gods? He is a wealth of knowledge, and has helped many people, including myself, get the most out of their setups with his prop suggestions.

I did, I bought the OFS4 through him per his suggestion. He did say I could get some rattle and it may be too much for the I4’s. Sent him an email again, to consider some other options or maybe his recommendations on 3 blades that will feel more like a 4.

My 4-blades from Ken @ PropGods were a game changer. Yamaha F150's 4-stroke on 268 Islander. Gave me a mid-range I didn't have with no loss of top end.

Which 4 blade is working well on your 150’s?

Haven’t seen this as an option yet. Same diameter 4 blade as my Turning Point 4 blade but offered in more pitch sizes.

What is your top speed with it and what RPM do you get at WOT? Which pitch are you running?

This could be an option for me. I know every manufacturer has a different prop shape with different drag/ resistance. A 14.25 / 15 p prop from two manufacturers won’t perform the same. I think my only concern is if the PTZ4 works similarly to my Turning Point, I would likely drop pitch to gain more RPM. Concern with that is I’d be losing even more top speed when I’ve already had a drastic loss with both 4 blades I’ve tried.

Using a 14x14 SCE4 (4 blade) on my 2021 208 Hardtop with i4 F200. Pretty happy with overall performance and good grip/control running inlets in NJ. I never had the original 14.25x17 reliance, the boat was propped with Solas 14.5x15 HR4 which l thought was overpropped. 5200rpm max, Ken recommended the SCE4. Running 3rd hole from bottom, with bottom paint, 5800rpm at 41-42mph

FYI the SCE4 was a recommendation from Ken at prop gods.

Edit: not sure if the 14.5 x 15p reliance would work. It’s the prop Grady specs for the heavier 218 with the F200. I thought about trying that one.

My number only reflect what happened with my boat. Game changing performance.

Your have different boat and different power. Talk to Ken at PropGods.com
