My 2003 330 Express has the original Horizon 600 Series Free Fall windlass that is starting to give me problems. Can you help with replacement advice? I have heard that the Lewmar Pro Fish 700 is a close replacement with identical bolt pattern and storage locker hole. Can anyone verify that? I have 1/4" chain and 1/2" mega-plait line that is in good shape. Thank you in advance for your help!

The Horizon 800 windlass has been long gone from the market. I replaced mine with the Lewmar ProFish 700. 1/4" chain and 1/2" 8-plait anchor rode. I have chewed up a few anchor rodes.

I would recommend going up a size for your boat to the Lewmar ProFish 1000 and 5/8 8-plaite.

Did the bolt pattern and storage locker hole match up for the Lewmar install??

Nope! Motor is on opposite side. I re-glassed and made new holes.

The ProFish 800 is very particular about feeding the rope/chain splice. Needs drop room in anchor locker which limits how much you can carry. I re-splices my original a dozen times to get it to work. Went to Lewmar anchor line - worked much better. You need to be careful retrieving line and a stuck anchor. The gypsy will chew the line up. You need to run the anchor over and pop it and not let the gypsy spin. Broke anchor off this Winter - 1 year old line. I would go up a size to the 1000 for your boat.

When you switch from the Horizon to the Lewmar you have some significant electrical work to do. The Horizon got power direct from the switch. The Lewmar requires a relay and heavy cables direct to the battery. When I installed my bow thruster I re-wired my Horizon to the 4th battery under my v-berth. Made it easier to upgrade to the Lewmar. The Lewmar relay was mounted under the fuse after this photo was taken.

As you can see, my retrieve on the original Horizon 600 FreeFall is on the starboard side. Hopefully, that will make things a bit easier. I am aware of the more complex wiring of the ProFish 1000 vs the 700. My current rode and chain are fairly new and in pretty good shape. Probably the install on the 700 would be easier and I could re-use my current line/chain. I rarely anchor over 100 feet deep and avoid bad weather conditions. I don't doubt the 1000 being the better unit, but it sure does come at a cost!

The windlass bolt holes won't line up. You will have to re-drill them. Look at install template.

Wiring the same for the Lewmar 700 and 1000. Both require a home run of heavy gauge wire from relay next to windlass to battery.
  • Lewmar Profish 700:
    • Normal Current Draw: 35 Amps
    • Circuit Breaker: 50 Amps

    • Circuit Breaker: 70 Amps
