Lewmar Pro Fish 700/1000 Windlass on a Marlin 300

Curious, has anyone upgraded to a Lewmar Pro Fish 700 or 1000 Windlass on the their Marlin? I have a Lewmar Pro Sport 550 now but it cant handle the amount of chain I am using. I would like to upgrade to the pro fish 1000, but it would require running all new wire to the windlass. Just wondering if anyone has done this already and how it went? Thanks!

I replaced the original Horizon windlass on my 330 Express with the Lewmar Pro Fish 700 about a year ago. I use 50 feet of chain. So far, I'm happy.

Jesti, I have installed both in different boats. Spring for the 1000 and make sure it's the Pro model to get free-fall. Running heavier wire and breaker is no big deal. Be sure to specify a gypsy for 5/16 chain.

I agree on going with the 1000 if you’re already doing the work. The wiring upgrade is usually the part people dread, but on a Marlin it’s pretty straightforward if you can use the existing run as a pull or at least follow the same path. Just be careful sizing the breaker and cable to Lewmar’s spec for the total run length, not just one-way distance.

Also good point on the gypsy. Matching the gypsy to the exact chain and rope is critical, especially with 5/16" chain, or you’ll chase slipping/jamming issues forever.
