You can also pry the lid off closest to the bench seat.It is under there.You will have to go under the bench seat to fully remove it.you will end up with a soar chest, but it's cheaper than having someone else do it. It helps to have a second pair of hands.

Had a similar issue, the boat would get on plane then lose rpm then pick back up again. It ended up being the stator.Not sure if yours is the same issue or not.

I have 1996 islander that had the same problem. I had it fixed for around $300. It is now stronger than ever. Just make sure to keep every thing sealed & watertight and you shouldn't have another problem.

over heating You could also take a look at the poppit valve.I just replaced my lower unit housing. It was corroded around the water pump and could not get a good seal. Some times it would work fine other times it over heated until finally it always over heated.Good luck I know what your going...
